Inverness Rowing Club is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation based on the Caledonian Canal at Torvean. It welcomes complete beginners and experienced rowers, including people interested in recreational development or competition.
Nine largely novice rowers conceived the club in 1987 under the name Rogie Falls Boat Club. Their first outing took place on the canal on 12 December 1987 in a refurbished eight, with the crew boating from Caley Marina and storing the boat nearby.
After only a handful of outings, that crew entered the Head of the River Race on the Thames. Inverness Rowing Club was formally established in April 1988, and members raced a newly acquired coxed four at the World Masters Regatta at Strathclyde Park later that year.
The club held the first Head of the Caledonian Canal in November 1988. In 1992, when membership had reached 30, it moved to a new boathouse south of Tomnahurich Bridge after a fundraising campaign.
Inverness now reports around 50 active members, from a junior section to masters rowers. Its equipment includes racing singles, doubles, pairs, quads, fours and eights, plus rowing machines and training boats, and its coaches teach both sculling and sweep rowing.
Beginners can progress from a come-and-try session into a learn-to-row programme, while experienced rowers can discuss their own aims with the club. Membership categories cover seniors, juniors, cadets, students, learners and temporary members.
The club normally stages the Inverness Fours and Small Boats Head and the Inverness Winter Head. Together these events can attract more than 500 boats, with racing offered over 4.5-kilometre and 3,750-metre courses on the canal.
