What is a Rowing Shell?

A rowing shell is a long, narrow racing boat used in competitive rowing. Modern shells are made of carbon fibre or fibreglass over a foam core, range from 8.2m for a single scull to 19.9m for an eight, and are built for one job: maximum speed through the water with the smallest possible drag. British rowers use "boat" and "shell" interchangeably, with "shell" most often heard in a racing context. American rowers say "shell" almost exclusively.

Why "shell"?

Racing rowing boats are called shells because the hull is so thin and light it resembles an eggshell. A modern single scull weighs around 14kg empty. An eight weighs around 96kg empty - less than a single rower. The hull skin is just a few millimetres thick: a sandwich of carbon fibre or fibreglass laminate over a foam or honeycomb core, vacuum-bagged and heat-cured. The result is rigid where it needs to be (so the rower's power transfers to the water rather than flexing the boat) and impossibly light everywhere else.

The name dates to the 19th century when racing boats were already being built much lighter than working rowing boats. The first sliding-seat shells appeared on the Thames and the Charles in the 1870s. By the 1900s, "shell" was the standard American term and the word stuck. British rowers use "boat" or "shell" interchangeably - "let's get the boat down" and "let's get the shell down" mean the same thing, with "shell" more common when the conversation is specifically about racing equipment. Australian rowers tend toward "boat".

Anatomy of a rowing shell

A racing shell has the same parts whether it carries one rower or eight:

  • Hull: the long, narrow body of the boat. Wineglass cross-section underwater, knife-thin at the bow and stern.
  • Bow and stern: the front and back. In rowing, the rowers face the stern - they row backwards with their backs to where the boat is going.
  • Bow ball: a soft rubber ball at the front, required for safety and to stop the bow puncturing other boats in collisions.
  • Riggers: the metal frames bolted to each side that extend the oarlocks out from the hull. Sweep boats have alternating left/right riggers; sculling boats have a rigger on each side per rower.
  • Oarlocks (gates): the U-shaped fittings at the end of the rigger that hold the oar in place during the stroke.
  • Foot stretchers: the angled platforms inside the boat where rowers strap their shoes in. Adjustable for different leg lengths.
  • Slide and seat: the wheeled seat that runs on tracks, allowing the rower to use their legs through the stroke.
  • Skeg and rudder: the small fin under the hull (skeg) keeps the boat tracking straight; the rudder steers. Coxed boats have a cox-controlled rudder; coxless boats use a foot-steering rudder.

The eight standard racing shell types

International rowing recognises eight standard racing boat classes. They split into sweep boats (one oar per rower) and sculling boats (two oars per rower):

Sculling shells (two oars per rower)

  • Single scull (1x): 8.2m long, 14kg minimum, one rower. The classic test of individual rowing speed.
  • Double scull (2x): 9.8m long, 27kg minimum, two rowers each with two oars.
  • Quadruple scull (4x): 12.5m long, 52kg minimum, four rowers each with two oars.

Sweep shells (one oar per rower)

  • Pair (2-): 9.8m long, 27kg minimum, two rowers each with one oar.
  • Coxless four (4-): 13.4m long, 50kg minimum, four rowers, no cox, foot steering.
  • Coxed four (4+): 13.4m long, 51kg minimum, four rowers plus a cox.
  • Eight (8+): 19.9m long, 96kg minimum, eight rowers plus a cox. The flagship boat in rowing.

Materials and construction

Top racing shells are built from carbon fibre prepreg laminate over a Nomex honeycomb or foam core. Carbon fibre gives stiffness without weight; the core gives shape and impact resistance. The hull is laid up by hand in a mould, vacuum-bagged to compress the layers, and cured at high temperature to bond everything together. The riggers are usually aluminium or carbon fibre. UK clubs typically buy from Empacher (Germany), Filippi (Italy), Hudson (Canada) and Sykes (Australia) through their British dealers, with WinTech and Vespoli (USA) appearing in some squads.

Wooden shells (cedar over a wooden frame) were the standard until the 1960s and are still raced in traditional events at Henley, but they are 30 to 50 percent heavier than modern composite hulls. Some clubs keep wooden boats for novice training because they are forgiving of beginner balance errors, but they are not raced competitively at international level.

How rowing clubs manage their shells

A typical UK club has 15 to 50 boats covering singles, doubles, quads, fours and eights for senior, novice, junior and masters squads. Tracking which boat is booked when, who has used it, when it was last serviced, and which crew is racing it on Saturday is the largest piece of admin most clubs underestimate. The eight (8+) always carries eight rowers plus a coxswain. Crew sizes are fixed by international rowing rules - there are no five-person, six-person or seven-person racing shells. Coxed boats add a coxswain who steers and calls the race but does not row.

The materials are vacuum-bagged and heat-cured to produce a hull that is light (a single scull is around 14kg, an eight around 96kg), stiff (so the rower's power transfers to the water rather than flexing the boat), and strong enough to survive racing impacts. Top-end manufacturers (Empacher, Filippi, Hudson, Sykes, WinTech, Vespoli) build shells to International Rowing Federation minimum weights. Wooden shells exist for traditional rowing but are no longer used at international level.

How much does a rowing shell cost?

New racing shells range from around GBP 6,000 for an entry-level club single scull to GBP 35,000 for a top-spec racing eight. Used shells trade for 30 to 60 percent of new pricing depending on age and condition. Most clubs build their fleet over decades, mixing top-tier racing boats for senior crews with older second-hand boats for novices and learn-to-row programmes. Boat purchase is usually the biggest single capital expense in a rowing club's annual budget.

What is the difference between a sweep shell and a sculling shell?

Sweep shells (pairs, fours, eights) are rigged for one oar per rower - rowers alternate sides down the boat, with bow seat on one side and stroke seat on the other. Sculling shells (singles, doubles, quads) are rigged for two oars per rower, one on each side. The riggers (the metal frames that hold the oarlocks) differ accordingly. Some shells are convertible between sweep and sculling rigs (often called 'crossover' or 'training boats'), but racing shells are typically built for one discipline. Most rowers learn to scull first and add sweep later.

How fast does a rowing shell go?

An Olympic men's eight covers 2,000m in around 5 minutes 20 seconds at the world record pace, averaging 22.5 km/h (14 mph). A women's single scull at world-record pace covers 2,000m in around 7 minutes 7 seconds, averaging 16.9 km/h. Bigger crews go faster because more rowers add more power than they add weight and drag. Tailwinds, current and water temperature all affect speed materially - which is why World Rowing only recognises 'best times' rather than 'records' for outdoor courses.
