What is Catching a Crab?

Catching a crab is when a rower's blade gets stuck in the water mid-stroke. The boat is still moving, so the moving water drives the oar handle hard into the rower. Minor crabs cost a stroke. Bad ones stop the boat. The worst (ejector crabs) throw the rower out altogether. Every rower catches them; learning to recover is part of every coxswain's race plan.

What actually happens when you catch a crab

A rowing stroke has four phases: catch (blade enters water), drive (legs and back drive the boat past the blade), finish (blade extracts from water), recovery (rower slides forward for the next catch). A crab happens when the blade does not behave at the catch or the finish.

At the finish, if the blade is feathered (turned flat) before it leaves the water, the angled face acts like a wing. The boat's forward motion drives water against the underside, which pushes the blade further down and back. The handle is yanked in toward the rower's body. At the catch, if the blade goes in at the wrong angle (too sharp or with too much height), it can spear the water and stick at depth before the rower has a chance to drive.

Either way, the rower has a few hundred milliseconds to react before the handle reaches their chest. Experienced rowers can absorb a small crab and pick up the next stroke. Beginners often freeze, which makes the crab worse - the boat keeps moving, the oar keeps fighting, and the handle eventually goes wherever the water wants it.

The four causes of crabs

Crabs come from one of four root causes. Most are technique problems that drills fix.

1. Over-feathering at the finish

The most common beginner crab. The rower turns the blade flat (feathers) too early, while it is still in the water. The flat blade angles down into the current and dives. Solution: extract the blade vertically before any rotation. Square-blade rowing drills retrain this in a few weeks.

2. Late or off-time catch

The rower drops their blade in after the rest of the crew. The boat is moving but the rower is not - the blade gets dragged backwards through the water. In a single, this is rare; in a crew, it usually points to a stroke-rate or focus issue. Watch the blade in front, match it.

3. Rough water

Waves push the blade unpredictably. A wave under the blade at the finish can rotate it before the rower extracts. Side-on wind chop is the worst. Coxes and steers stay on protected water in bad conditions; coaches cancel sessions when the river is unsafe. Session management software with weather-aware cancellation is one of the most useful admin features in winter and storm-prone seasons.

4. Boat balance

If the boat tips toward a rower's side, their blade buries deeper than planned. They cannot extract cleanly because the blade is below the waterline at the finish. Balance is a crew-wide problem - one rower's bad finish becomes the next rower's crab.

How to recover when you catch a crab

Stay calm. Push the handle straight down (not sideways - sideways twists the rigger). The downward force lifts the blade out. Square it as it comes out, take a beat, and pick up the next stroke in time with the crew.

For a bigger crab, let the handle pass you. Turn your shoulders out of the way (lean back if needed), wait for the boat to lose enough momentum that the oar can be extracted normally, then square the blade and re-set. The cox or stroke seat will call "keep rowing" if the crew can absorb it, or "easy oar" if the boat needs to stop.

For an ejector crab in a crew boat, the rower is thrown out. The boat keeps going for a moment, the cox calls "easy", everyone holds water and stops the boat. The rower swims back. Their buoyancy aid keeps them up. The boat floats. Get the rower back in via the riggers (climb in over the side using the rigger as a step) or swim alongside until the safety launch arrives. In a single scull, an ejector crab usually means a capsize - the capsize drill (climb on top of the upturned hull, swim it to the bank) is the recovery.

Why beginners catch crabs and experienced rowers don't

Beginner crabs come from technique gaps. The brain has not yet automated the extraction sequence (extract vertically, then feather, then square again before the catch). Once the sequence is muscle memory, crabs from over-feathering disappear. This usually takes 6 to 12 months of regular rowing.

Experienced rowers still catch crabs, but for different reasons - rough water, surprise contact with floating debris, blade clash with another crew, or a balance problem that develops over a long piece. Their recovery is faster because they feel the crab developing and start the recovery before it fully forms. They also know when not to fight a crab (let it go past, accept the lost stroke, get back in time for the next catch). Big crabs at high-profile fixtures - the Boat Race, BUCS Regatta, Henley Royal - happen even at the top level when rough conditions and tight margins collide.

What clubs do to reduce crabs

Coaching drill schedules, capsize qualifications, river condition checks and proper safety boat cover all reduce crab severity. Most clubs run formal capsize tests every year for scullers and small-boat rowers - a session in cold water with proper safety cover, where rowers practise capsizing on purpose and re-entering the boat. For coaches, building square-blade and pause drills into scheduled sessions is the long-term fix. Coach tools let coaches log technical notes against individual rowers - "needs work on finish height", "over-feathers in port boats" - so the next coach picking up the squad knows exactly what to drill.

Yes - and it usually means a capsize. With no crew to steady the boat, a crab in a single scull tips the rower into the water. Most novice scullers capsize their first crab. Experienced scullers learn to feel a crab developing and counter it before the blade fully buries. Carrying a Buoyancy Aid (PFD) and knowing the capsize drill (climb back onto the upturned hull, then re-enter from the bow) is mandatory in most learn-to-scull programmes. British Rowing, USRowing and Rowing Australia all require a capsize and re-entry test before a sculler can take a single out alone.

Why is it called catching a crab?

The phrase dates to early-19th-century English river rowing, when watermen on the Thames described a stuck oar as if a crab on the river bottom had grabbed the blade and refused to let go. The image stuck. By the 1850s, 'catching a crab' was the standard term in rowing handbooks and it survives unchanged in modern rowing. The phrase is unique to rowing - it does not appear in sailing, canoeing or other water sports. American, British and Australian rowers all use the same expression.

How do coaches help rowers stop catching crabs?

Coaches drill out crabs through three exercises. First, square-blade rowing (rowing without feathering) forces the rower to extract the blade vertically before any rotation, which eliminates the over-feathering crab. Second, pause drills at the finish hold the blade square out of the water for a beat, building muscle memory for clean extraction. Third, balance drills (sitting at the finish, balance with hands away, square-blade pause at hands-away) train the rower to feel the boat's set so they recognise when a crab is about to happen. Most novice crab problems disappear in 6 to 8 weeks of regular drill work.
