Newcastle University Boat Club is the university's rowing programme on the River Tyne, with its boathouse at Newburn. It began in March 1911 as Armstrong College Boat Club, established to promote rowing among the college's students.

A women's club was established in 1924, and a new boathouse was built at Stella Haugh in 1929. The official history records that the men's Championship Eights won the Northern Universities Regatta for eight consecutive years by 1982.

Today the club has senior and novice squads for men and women. It holds open trials for students with no previous rowing experience, while experienced athletes train for GB trials, BUCS Head, the Head of the River Race, BUCS Regatta and the two Henley regattas.

The Newburn base offers five kilometres upstream, a 1,500-metre test straight and the possibility of rowing 15 kilometres into Newcastle. The university's 2021 sports facilities added more than 40 rowing machines at Cochrane Park, and the boathouse has a fleet of Hudson eights and smaller boats.

The High Performance Programme is recognised and supported by the GB Rowing Team. The club's history also records a 1994 Temple Challenge Cup third-round appearance and a national championship bronze in the pair that year.

Newcastle runs the annual Tyne Single Scullers Head and contests the Boat Race of the North against Durham University. The event term in the slug therefore belongs to the current university club, whose published Newburn address is Newburn Bridge Road, Blaydon, NE15 8NR.
