Athlone Boat Club rows from the banks of the River Shannon beside Custume Barracks. Founded in 1837, it describes itself as one of Ireland's oldest rowing clubs and says it has remained on its original Athlone site.

The club provides rowing from age 13 upwards. Its own pages cover junior, senior, masters, leisure, cox and non-rowing membership, while its history also records activity at Coosan Point.

Athlone is a non-profit organisation run by volunteer coaches, parents and supporters. Its facilities are also used by groups from across the town for meetings, training and events.

A major redevelopment produced a flood-proof, accessible headquarters designed to house boats and equipment for rowers of different ages and abilities. At the first regatta held from the new headquarters, the club hosted 26 visiting clubs for 117 races.

The club recorded three Irish Championship wins in 2021. Donagh Claffey and Martin O'Grady represented Ireland at the 2021 World Rowing Junior Championships, and the club says other rowers have also reached international competition.

Athlone continues to run its own regatta at Coosan Point. Rowing Ireland's 2026 event record lists masters, junior and senior racing on the programme, alongside detailed safety, parking and course documents prepared by the club.
