How a percentile standing is built from a raw erg score

A percentile standing reads a raw 2k, 5k or 6k through two filters before placing it on a band. First the Concept2 weight factor: adjusted time equals raw time multiplied by weight in pounds over 270, raised to the power 0.222, so a 70 kg lightweight on 6:30 lands around 6:14. Then the Concept2 logbook age coefficient lifts a masters athlete back onto open-age ground. The combined number is what gets compared to Rowing Ireland trial sheets, IURC 1st VIII benchmarks and Irish Champs selection bands to decide which percentile bucket the athlete sits in.

Building the percentile from weight and age inputs

The Concept2 weight handicap

The published equation is weight-adjusted time = actual time * (weight in lb / 270)^0.222. The 270 lb anchor sits between male openweight (about 210 to 220 lb) and lightweight (about 155 to 160 lb), so the correction works in both directions. The 0.222 exponent is the result of regression on a large sample of Concept2 logbook test scores. On a static machine, more body mass buys a small bonus through stored momentum, but the effect is sub-linear, which is why the exponent sits well under 1.

Worked example: a 70 kg UCC lightweight rowing 6:30 lands a weight-adjusted score around 6:14, level pegs with a 95 kg Skibbereen openweight on the same raw 6:30. Without that step, the lighter athlete carries a permanent and unfair handicap when the trial sheet goes up on the boathouse wall. Run two squadmates of different bodyweights through the form above and the percentile column makes the gap (or the lack of it) honest.

Concept2 logbook age coefficients

The Concept2 logbook publishes an age table that climbs above 30, where most personal-best erg scores get recorded. At 30 the coefficient is 1.000 (no shift). At 40 it is around 1.034. At 50 it is around 1.110. At 60 it is around 1.200. At 70 it is around 1.320. A 50-year-old Garda RC sculler on a 7:00 2k holds an age-graded equivalent close to 6:18, which slots into the same percentile bucket as a 6:18 from a 30-year-old. The Irish Masters Rowing circuit and Concept2 logbook standings both run on these factors.

Masters rowers at Neptune, Garda or the smaller Lough Ree clubs should read the age-graded number the way runners read WMA grading. The raw split is what the PM5 logged. The graded score is what the same effort would have produced at peak athletic age. Both readings have a job. The graded one is what lets a B-grade master and a senior open-age athlete compare benchmarks without either party having to caveat the conversation. It is also what makes a squad-wide percentile chart across age groups land cleanly.

Stacking the two handicaps

Order is irrelevant mathematically: time * weight factor * age factor = time * age factor * weight factor. The output panel above shows the raw split, the weight-adjusted figure, the age-graded figure and the stacked combined score. That combined number is the one to drop onto the benchmark table to read off a percentile band. For squad use, the same stacked figure is what lets a coach put a 38-year-old Commercial 3 seat and a 21-year-old NUIG fresher on the same selection sheet without either being misrepresented.

How the percentile bands are built

The bands behind this tool are stitched from published Concept2 logbook standings, Rowing Ireland senior and pathway testing figures, historic Irish Champs and IURC entry data, and indicative numbers from the Castleconnell to Skibbereen open-club circuit. They are not laboratory-grade percentiles (real percentile work depends on which exact population was sampled), but they are honest about which population each shelf describes. A 6:30 2k from a 22-year-old male openweight is genuinely top-25% across the global Concept2 logbook, and that placement holds firm whichever Irish data source the band is checked against.

What the percentile tool will not do

It does not overrule Rowing Ireland racing categories. If the federation books a lightweight under 75 kg openweight crew average or 72.5 kg individual lightweight, those rules govern racing entries regardless of what an adjusted score reads. It also does not forecast on-water boat speed at Inniscarra or on the Lee. Water times move with rigging, current, wind and the rest of the crew. A strong erg figure is necessary for fast boats but never sufficient on its own.
