Carlow Rowing Club is based at Barrow Track in Carlow Town and rows on the River Barrow. County planning material describes competitive and recreational rowing from purpose-built premises opposite the Town Park.
The club was founded in 1859. Its membership reached 95 in 1884, when crews were travelling as far as Waterford, although surviving club minutes then have a gap between 1897 and 1916.
Between 1900 and 1903, a four formed by Bell, Duggan, Boake and Orr won for Carlow at Waterford, Wexford, Carlow, New Ross and Dublin University Regatta. The club launched its first eight in 1921.
After a 20-year dormant period, Carlow returned in the 1950s. It acquired former canal-store premises in 1960 or 1961, refurbished them and opened the new clubhouse in 1962.
The club now includes junior, senior, masters and recreational rowers. Jimmy O'Neill, Niall O'Brien and Michael Nolan are among the Carlow members recorded as having represented Ireland at World Championships and international regattas.
Carlow Regatta is held on the River Barrow over the June bank-holiday weekend. Its 2023 edition marked the festival's 164th year, with more than 19 clubs and racing for junior 13 through masters crews; club volunteers, coaches and parents supported the two-day programme.
