Waterford Boat Club was founded on 20 May 1878 after a public meeting at City Hall. More than 50 people initially subscribed, and membership had reached 130 by the time the club formally launched.

The club is Waterford City's only rowing club and describes itself as the city's oldest surviving sports club. Its boathouse is at Canada Street, opposite the Marina Hotel, Waterford, X91 VHT7.

Waterford first raced from a site near De La Salle College, moved to two successive Ferrybank premises from 1885, and returned to the city side in 1980. The Canada Street clubhouse was rebuilt during 1990s urban renewal and officially opened in October 1997.

The club provides regular training for men, women, boys and girls. Junior try-outs accept beginners aged 11 to 14 through a waiting list, while the published programme normally gives each group four sessions per week and combines water work with rowing machines, running, core work and age-appropriate weights.

Its first regatta took place on the River Suir on 3 August 1879, when Waterford won the Waterford Challenge Cup. The annual regatta moved to a four-lane, 500-metre course at Belle Lake in 1999.

Waterford remains active nationally, with a 2026 calendar covering indoor championships, heads, Grand League regattas and the Irish Championships. At Carlow Regatta in 2026, 23 entries produced 11 wins across junior singles, doubles and coxed quads.

Sean Harte represented Ireland during 2025, winning junior-quad gold at the Home International Regatta and competing at the European Beach Sprint Championships. He also finished fifth in the men's junior 18 single at the Irish Championships and joined Rowing Ireland's Youth Commission.
