About this club

Gisborne Rowing Club rows on the Waimata River in Gisborne, from its green rowing sheds in Anzac Park on Score Road. It is a small club run by volunteers.

The club has a strong school programme and is growing its recreational and masters crews. Training runs most evenings after school or work and at weekends. A Learn to Row course runs in September and needs no previous experience.

The club was formed in August 1874. It built its first shed opposite the site of the Harbour Board Offices, starting with two second-hand boats bought from Auckland, and a club house replacing that shed was built on the same site in 1894. The first contest between Gisborne Rowing Club and Napier Rowing Club was held in 1876 and was won by Napier.
