What is Catching a Crab?
A buried blade. The hull keeps running, the oar does not, and the handle gets hammered back into the rower's chest. The smallest crab costs a beat of rhythm. A real one stops the boat dead. The worst kind throws the rower into the water altogether. Every athlete catches them, from a Year 9 novice at Hamilton Boys' to a Bond Cup contender at Karapiro. Knowing what to do in the half-second after impact is what separates a lost stroke from a capsize.
What actually happens when you catch a crab
The rowing stroke breaks into four moments. Catch (the blade drops into the water). Drive (the legs and back push the hull past the planted blade). Finish (the blade comes out cleanly). Recovery (the slide rolls forward and the body resets for the next catch). A crab is a fault at one of two of those moments: a botched finish or a botched catch.
Take the finish first. If the blade is rolled flat (feathered) while it is still underwater, the now-angled face turns into a wing. Forward boat speed flows over and under the wing, and the resulting pressure dives the blade further down and back. The handle is yanked towards the body with whatever force the hull happens to be carrying. At the catch the failure is different. If the blade is dropped in at too steep an angle, or from too much height, it spears the water rather than placing on it. The oar pins itself at depth before the legs have even fired.
The window to react is a few hundred milliseconds either way before the handle reaches the ribs. A senior rower can absorb a small one, square the blade, and rejoin the rhythm without losing the stroke. A first-season athlete will often freeze. Freezing makes everything worse. The hull is still moving, the oar is still loading, and the handle ends up wherever the physics sends it.
The four causes of crabs
Almost every crab traces back to one of four causes. Three are technique faults that drill work corrects. The fourth is environmental and gets managed rather than fixed.
1. Over-feathering at the finish
This is the bread-and-butter novice crab. The wrist rotation that turns the blade from square to flat happens too soon, while the spoon is still below the waterline. The flat face angles down into the boat run and dives. The fix is mechanical: lift first, then feather. Square-blade pieces force the sequence in the right order and rewire the pattern within a few weeks of regular work.
2. Late or off-time catch
A blade that drops in after the rest of the crew gets dragged backwards through the water. The boat is up to speed, the rower is not, and the oar is moving the wrong way relative to the flow. Rare in a single. In a crew boat, it usually means the rower has lost concentration or has slipped off the stroke seat's rate. The remedy is the oldest one in coaching: eyes on the blade ahead of you, match its timing exactly.
3. Rough water
Wave action moves the blade off the rower's intended line. A swell rising under the spoon at the finish can roll the blade before the handle has cleared. Beam-on chop is the worst variety. Coxes route crews onto the sheltered side of the lake when conditions get awkward, and coaches pull sessions entirely when the water becomes genuinely dangerous. 4. Boat balance
A boat sitting down on one side puts that side\'s blade deeper than the rig was set up for. At the finish, the spoon is below the waterline and cannot release cleanly. Set is a crew-wide responsibility, not an individual one. One rower\'s sloppy finish becomes the next rower\'s crab, and the next rower\'s correction becomes the third rower\'s set problem.
How to recover when you catch a crab
Stay calm. The single most important word in the sequence. Drive the handle straight down towards the deck. Down, not sideways - sideways pressure twists the rigger and can damage it. The downward force pivots the spoon up and out of the water. Square it as it surfaces, take a beat to gather, and place the next catch in time with the crew.
A bigger crab is different. Do not try to hold it. Let the handle travel past you and rotate the shoulders out of its arc. Lean back if there is room. The hull will lose speed quickly with a buried oar dragging, and the spoon will lift on its own once the load comes off. Square it, find the catch timing, rejoin. The cox or stroke seat calls the response: "keep rowing" when the boat can absorb it, "easy oar" when the boat needs to come to a complete stop.
An ejector in a crew boat puts the rower in the water. The hull carries on for a moment, the cox calls 'easy oar' and 'hold water', and the boat parks. The rower swims back. The PFD takes care of buoyancy, the hull floats, and the situation is recoverable. Re-entry is done by climbing back over the rigger, using it as a step from the water, with the rest of the crew leaning hard the other way to hold the boat down. If conditions or fatigue make that impossible, the safety launch comes in. An ejector in a single is a capsize by another name. The capsize drill (onto the upturned hull, swim it in, or self-rescue back into the bow if trained) is the response.
Why beginners catch crabs and experienced rowers don't
Novice crabs are a wiring problem in the brain, not a moral failing. The extraction sequence (lift the blade out, then feather the wrist, then square again well before the catch) is not yet automated. Until it is, the brain skips steps under load. The automation period typically runs six to twelve months of consistent water time, faster for athletes with a strong sporting background, slower for adults learning later in life. Once it sticks, the early-feather crab effectively disappears.
Senior rowers still catch them, but the cause profile shifts. Rough water, log strikes, a clash with another crew's blade, a set problem developing slowly across a 20-minute piece. Experienced response is faster because they feel the handle starting to load incorrectly and begin the recovery while the crab is still forming. They also know when to give up on a crab and protect the boat instead of fighting it. A famous example is the high-profile crab the Eric Murray and Hamish Bond pair never seemed to catch despite a career of brutal conditions - the recovery instincts of senior international athletes are quietly extraordinary. At Maadi finals on Lake Ruataniwha and at NZ Champs at Karapiro, crabs at the top end of the field still happen when wash, wind, and tight margins line up against a crew.
What clubs do to reduce crabs
Crab severity comes down through a few non-negotiables: a working drill schedule from the coach, capsize sign-offs on the wall for every sculler, water condition checks before launch, and proper safety launch cover for every session. Most Rowing NZ affiliated clubs run an annual capsize test for scullers and small-boat athletes - a controlled session, usually in the cooler months under coach supervision, where rowers tip the boat on purpose, swim, and practise re-entry. Member portal qualification tracking is how a captain proves on demand that every athlete has done the test, when, and which boats they are cleared to take out without supervision.
For coaches, the long fix is putting square-blade work and pause drills into the standing session plan rather than treating them as something pulled out only when things go wrong. Coach tools let the technical notes on each rower travel with the athlete from one coach to the next: "extracts late on port", "feathers under the water in chop", "set drops between strokes 8 and 12 on the 5k". A new coach picking up a squad mid-season knows on day one which faults to drill and which athletes to watch.

How do you recover from catching a crab?
For a small crab, press the handle vertically downwards to lever the blade up, square it on the way out, and join the next catch. For a larger one, rotate your shoulders out of the arc, let the handle travel past you, wait for the hull to bleed off speed, then re-set the blade. The cox calls 'keep rowing' or 'easy oar' depending on whether the crew can hold rate. For an ejector, you go into the water. The cox stops the boat, the crew holds water, and you swim back. Your PFD floats you and the shell floats itself.
Can you catch a crab in a single scull?
In a single, a real crab is almost always a swim. Nothing else in the boat holds it level, so the moment the blade buries, the sculler tips over the gunwale. A first proper crab is most novice scullers first capsize. With miles under the belt, a sculler can feel the load building wrongly through the handle and back the pressure off before it goes. Before any sculler at a Rowing NZ affiliated club takes a single out unsupervised, they need to be signed off on the capsize drill, with the test re-done annually at most boatsheds.
Why is it called catching a crab?
The etymology runs back to 19th-century rowing on English rivers, where the watermen described a stuck blade as if a crab on the bottom had locked its claw around the oar. The image survived. By around 1850 it was the standard term in printed rowing manuals, and it crossed to Aotearoa with the sport itself. No other paddle sport borrowed it - waka ama, canoeing, and SUP do not use the phrase. Kiwi, Aussie, Brit and American rowers all share the same expression.
How do coaches help rowers stop catching crabs?
Three drills do most of the work. Square-blade rowing forces a clean vertical extraction before any wrist movement happens, which kills the early-feather crab at source. Finish pauses train the muscle memory of lifting the blade rather than rolling it. Set drills like hands-away balance teach the rower to read what the boat is doing and feel a crab coming before it lands. Six to eight weeks of consistent drill work clears most of the technique-driven crabs.
