What is a Rowing Shell?

A rowing shell is the racing hull itself - the long, slender boat racked along the walls of every NZ boatshed from Rowing NZ HQ at Lake Karapiro down to Ruataniwha, Lake Hood and the Waitemata sheds in Auckland. Each hull is carbon fibre laminated over a honeycomb or foam core, finished only three or four millimetres thick, and tuned to one specification: hold a line at racing pace with the smallest wetted area possible dragging behind it. Kiwi rowers move freely between "shell" and "boat" in everyday talk; "shell" tightens up once the conversation turns to race kit, trailer loading and the run up to Karapiro for the Maadi Cup.

Why "shell"?

The hull skin really is a shell. Three to four millimetres of laminate over a honeycomb or PVC foam core, no thicker than the wall of a stainless drink bottle. Push hard with a thumb below the waterline of a new Empacher single and the hull dimples in. Pick the boat up by the riggers, walk it down the boatshed ramp at Karapiro, and a single scull empty weighs about 14 kg - lighter than a full Pak'nSave bag of catering rice. An eight empty sits around 96 kg - less than the lightest seven of the crew that will pick it up off the trestles. Carbon laminate gives the hull its stiffness so the legs drive the boat forward instead of flexing the bottom behind the foot stretcher; the core gives the wineglass shape and absorbs the inevitable trolley dings and gunwale knocks of life inside a busy boatshed.

The name dates back to the wooden racing hulls of the 1800s, when builders were already producing boats far lighter than the working dinghies tied up on the same rivers. Sliding-seat racing boats arrived later in that century and the word "shell" settled in as the standard term once carbon and fibreglass took over from cedar in the 1960s. Inside an Aotearoa club - Star Boating on Wellington Harbour, Canterbury RC on the Avon, Mercer at Karapiro, Hamilton Boys' down the road - "boat" and "shell" travel side by side without anyone keeping score. The word the squad reaches for tends to harden into "shell" when the talk is about trailer manifests, lane allocations and which hull is going on which trolley for the Maadi run.

Anatomy of a rowing shell

A racing shell carries the same building blocks whether it holds a single sculler or a crew of nine:

  • Hull: the racing body of the boat. Wineglass section below the waterline, knife edges at bow and stern, painted in a colour tough enough to survive Aotearoa UV through a summer season on outdoor racks.
  • Bow and stern: the front and back. Rowers sit facing the stern and travel backwards down the lane, watching the course markers astern as they go.
  • Bow ball: the soft rubber tip required at the forward point under Rowing NZ safety rules. A split or missing bow ball is a routine fail at NZ Champs and Maadi Cup boat scrutineering.
  • Riggers: the outrigger arms bolted to each side of the hull that carry the gates clear of the gunwale. Sweep and sculling rigs sit at different geometry, and the rigger glossary entry covers the mechanics.
  • Oarlocks (gates): the swivel U-shaped fittings clipped to the rigger end that pivot the oar through the stroke.
  • Foot stretchers: the angled plate inside the hull where each rower's shoes (usually Velcro-strapped and plate-mounted) anchor. Pitch, height and forward position all adjust per athlete.
  • Slide and seat: the wheeled moulded seat running on a pair of stainless steel rails so the leg drive can move through the stroke.
  • Skeg and rudder: the small fixed fin holding the boat on course (skeg) and the steerable blade behind it (rudder). Coxed boats route the rudder to the cox; coxless boats run a toe-steering cable off one rower's stretcher.

The eight standard racing shell types

World Rowing recognises eight standard racing classes, all contested up the line at Lake Karapiro for the NZ Champs, the Maadi Cup and NZURA finals. Sculling shells (two oars per rower)

  • Single scull (1x): 8.2 m hull, 14 kg minimum weight, one sculler. The benchmark test of individual boat speed.
  • Double scull (2x): 9.8 m hull, 27 kg minimum, two scullers with two oars apiece.
  • Quadruple scull (4x): 12.5 m hull, 52 kg minimum, four scullers with two oars apiece.

Sweep shells (one oar per rower)

  • Pair (2-): 9.8 m hull, 27 kg minimum, two rowers with one oar each.
  • Coxless four (4-): 13.4 m hull, 50 kg minimum, four rowers, no cox, toe steering off bow seat.
  • Coxed four (4+): 13.4 m hull, 51 kg minimum, four rowers plus a coxswain.
  • Eight (8+): 19.9 m hull, 96 kg minimum, eight rowers plus a coxswain. The showpiece event on every Maadi finals day.

Materials, build and hull life

Premium racing shells are laid up from carbon fibre prepreg over a Nomex honeycomb or PVC foam core. The carbon does the stiffening work, critical so the rower's leg drive pushes the hull forward instead of flexing it behind the foot stretcher. The core holds the wineglass shape and soaks up the inevitable knocks of moving a 19 m boat in and out of the boatshed. Each hull is hand-laid into a female mould, debulked under vacuum, then cured in an autoclave at around ninety degrees. Riggers are usually aluminium tube or carbon section, bolted to the gunwale through ply backing pads. NZ club fleets lean heavily on Sykes (the Australian builder dominant at Kiwi club level), with Hudson (Canada) and Filippi (Italy) thick at the elite end and a smaller spread of Empacher (Germany) and Wintech hulls scattered through senior squads. A new Empacher single runs about NZD 18,000 to 22,000; an Aotearoa club ordering a new racing eight is typically writing a cheque past NZD 130,000 by the time the riggers, seats and bow numbers are bolted on.

Well-stored composite shells hold their racing pace for ten to fifteen seasons before the core starts to delaminate and the hull begins to "pop" under load. Older boats demote down the squad ladder rather than being thrown out: an ex-1st-VIII shell often lives a second decade as the 2nd or 3rd VIII boat, then settles into senior masters or summer learn-to-row use. Race hulls also differ from training hulls. A purpose-built race shell carries thinner laminate, tighter tolerances and more aggressive hull geometry, all paid for in fragility and the way it punishes a Karapiro side breeze. Most clubs keep a few thicker-skinned training hulls (older Sykes or Wintech boats) for the novice block, where the extra forgiveness suits crews still finding balance. Cedar wooden shells, planked on a timber frame, were standard kit up to the 1960s and still appear at heritage events; they run 30 to 50 percent heavier than composite and have no place in NZ club, schools or elite racing today.

How rowing clubs store and manage their shells

A typical NZ club houses 10 to 40 shells across singles, doubles, quads, fours and eights, stacked on the double-decker timber racks that line every Aotearoa boatshed from the Mighty River Domain at Karapiro through Ruataniwha at Twizel, Lake Hood at Ashburton and the Waitemata sheds at St Heliers and Westhaven. Knowing which hull is racked where, who took it out last, when it was last gel-coated, and which crew is loading it on the trailer for Saturday is the quiet admin most clubs underestimate - right up until the boatshed whiteboard fills up and the squad WhatsApp threads start chasing missing oars and rigger spanners. Why is a rowing boat called a shell?

How many people fit in a rowing shell?

Standard racing shells carry 1, 2, 4 or 8 rowers. The single scull (1x) takes one sculler. Doubles (2x) and pairs (2-) take two. Quads (4x), coxed fours (4+) and coxless fours (4-) take four. What is a rowing shell made of?

A modern rowing shell is built from carbon fibre prepreg laid over a Nomex honeycomb or PVC foam core. How much does a rowing shell cost in New Zealand?

A new club-grade single scull lands around NZD 12,000 in New Zealand; a top-end Empacher or Filippi single runs NZD 18,000 to 22,000. New racing eights clear NZD 120,000 to 140,000 once riggers, seats and bow numbers are bolted on. Used shells trade at 30 to 60 percent of new pricing depending on age, builder and condition. Most NZ clubs assemble a fleet over many seasons, pairing newer hulls for senior crews with older second-hand boats for novices, masters and the summer learn-to-row intake. A new eight is typically the largest single capital line in a club's annual budget, often funded through Sport NZ grants, club trusts or community fundraising.

How long does a rowing shell last?

What is the difference between a sweep shell and a sculling shell?

Sculling shells (singles, doubles, quads) are rigged for two oars per rower, one on each side. Sweep shells (pairs, fours, eights) are rigged for one oar per rower, alternating port and starboard down the boat. A handful of training hulls are built convertible, with the same boat accepting either rigger set, but purpose-built racing shells are committed to one rig. Most Kiwi rowers come through sculling first via novice singles and doubles before moving into the sweep eights and fours that dominate Maadi Cup finals day.

How fast does a rowing shell go?

An Olympic men's eight covers 2,000 m in around 5 minutes 20 seconds at world-record pace, averaging 22.5 km/h. A women's single at world-record pace runs 2,000 m in around 7 minutes 7 seconds, averaging 16.9 km/h. Bigger crews go faster because each extra rower adds more power than they add to the overall weight and drag. Course conditions matter: a tailwind down Karapiro can skew times by several seconds, which is why World Rowing tracks "best times" on outdoor courses rather than formal world records. Hamish Bond and Eric Murray, racing a pair, produced some of the fastest pair times ever recorded over their unbeaten run from 2009 to the Rio Olympics.
