Method behind the percentile bands
The Concept2 bodyweight handicap, line by line
Concept2 ties bodyweight to time through one equation: handicapped time = raw time * (weight in lb / 270)^0.222. The 270 lb anchor falls between male openweight (around 210 to 220 lb) and the lightweight cap (around 155 to 160 lb), so the same equation normalises both directions off one midpoint. The 0.222 exponent was fitted to a large pool of real logbook scores. It captures the empirical reality that extra mass on a static flywheel is a real but sub-linear advantage. The figure is not a coaching guess. It is a regression coefficient, and the same one Rowing New Zealand applies on selection paperwork.
Practical reading: a 70 kg Maadi lightweight pulling 6:30 settles at around 6:14 once the handicap is applied, which lines them up evenly with a 95 kg open-age stroke seat at the same raw time. Skip the handicap and the lighter athlete looks slower on the spreadsheet despite identical fitness. The calculator overhead does that arithmetic in one click and lets a coach hold up two crew members side by side at the same metric, with no mental conversion.
Concept2 logbook age coefficients in practice
The Concept2 logbook age coefficients climb once you cross 30, the age past which peak erg output starts to fade in the data. The coefficient sits at 1.000 at age 30 (no shift), about 1.034 at 40, close to 1.110 at 50, near 1.200 at 60 and around 1.320 at 70. Work the maths through a real Kiwi example: a 50-year-old single sculler at West End Rowing Club pulls 7:00 over the Olympic 2k, age-grades to about 6:18, and lands in the same percentile bucket as a 6:18 from a 28-year-old contender for a Bond Cup seat at Otago University.
Masters athletes should read the age-graded number the same way veteran runners read WMA grading: the raw time is what your erg actually showed mid-piece, the graded number is what the result would translate to at peak athletic age. Both figures earn their keep. The graded one is especially useful at New Zealand clubs with broad age spreads, like Wellington Rowing Club or Avon Rowing Club, where a 55-year-old sculler and a 22-year-old prop forward switched-to-sculling end up on the same ranking ladder for fair selection.
Combining the two adjustments
Order of operations does not matter: raw * bodyweight factor * age factor returns the same number as raw * age factor * bodyweight factor. The tool shows all four figures - raw, bodyweight-handicapped, age-graded, and the stacked combined score. The combined number is the one to read against the standards table to lift out a percentile band. A 60-year-old masters lightweight at 7:20 lands inside the Rowing New Zealand development range once both adjustments are stacked, which the raw figure would never show.

The bands on this page are aggregated from published Concept2 logbook data, Rowing New Zealand high-performance selection paperwork, NZURA Bond Cup ergo trialling sheets, the school-by-school Maadi entry data captured at Lake Karapiro and Lake Ruataniwha, and the masters tables used at the North and South Island Champs. No single source is perfect, because real percentiles always depend on the population sampled. The bands published here are honest about which population they describe. A 6:30 2k from a 22-year-old male openweight is genuinely top-25% across the global Concept2 logbook, and that placement holds steady against every NZ data source we cross-checked.
What this percentile tool will not do
It will not override the Rowing New Zealand or NZURA lightweight category caps. If the federation says a lightweight is under 75 kg openweight or 72.5 kg lightweight for a regatta, that cap is the eligibility figure for race day, no matter what the bodyweight-handicapped score returns. It will not translate an erg result into on-water boat speed at Karapiro either. Shell speed is set by rigging, water state, wind direction and crew timing in ways no flywheel formula can model. A strong handicapped score earns a seat on the trial sheet. It does not guarantee the eight is fast off the start.
