About this club

Whangarei Rowing Club rows on the Hātea River and Whangārei Harbour from its clubhouse at 68 Riverside Drive, Whangārei, beside the Loop Walkway and across the water from the Waka sculpture. It is the northernmost rowing club in New Zealand.

The club was founded around 1904 and was based on the Bluff of the Whangārei Town Basin until the 1960s. Members train on Whangārei Harbour all year round.

There are around 60 to 70 active members aged from 13 to 78. Junior rowers come from Years 9 to 13, club rowers range from late teens to adults, and masters rowers are aged 27 and over. A small group of novices is taken on each year during the winter training period from April to September, ready to race from October. New rowers need to be able to swim 50 metres.

Members have won national titles at secondary school, club and masters level, and several have gone on to represent New Zealand.
