About this club

Bangor University Boat Club is run by and for Bangor University students. Its home water is Llyn Padarn near Llanberis, about 20 minutes from Bangor, where lake sessions run subject to weather.

The club has both experienced and novice rowers who train regularly with the option to race. Its published schedule separates men's, senior women's and novice women's ergometer sessions and adds common strength, gym, running and weekend water training. Students may attend two taster sessions before committing, and rowing requires the students' union's competition-level annual sports pass.

Bangor rowing traces its history to 1901. The club formerly rowed from a boathouse on the Menai Strait between Menai Suspension Bridge and Garth Pier before relocating to Llyn Padarn after the former location was deemed a health and safety risk.

A Bangor Fund grant allowed the club to renew part of its small fleet in 2024, repair two damaged boats and commission a boat designed for the women's team. The university said the work increased training capacity and enabled the club to resume training quickly.

Bangor crews compete at British Universities and Colleges Sport events, Chester Regatta and local heads and regattas. The club is affiliated to both British Rowing and Welsh Rowing.
