About this club

Lymington Amateur Rowing Club is based on Almansa Way in Lymington, Hampshire. Its mission covers all forms of rowing in Lymington and the New Forest, with Learn to Row, recreational, indoor and racing programmes. British Rowing named it Club of the Year for 2025.

The club traces its foundation to around 1881 beside the Coastguards slipway. Activity lapsed after the First World War, and Edward Austin and Bart Wilshin re-founded the club in 1947 or 1948 at Clements Coalyard on the Quay.

Lymington recorded its first Hants and Dorset senior-pair win in 1975. Its men's junior four became Hants and Dorset champions in the centenary year of 1981, and the club's first South Coast Championship win followed in the men's junior four in 2007. Women's junior and senior fours added association and South Coast honours in 2010 and 2012.

The current two-storey facility at Lymington Shores opened in 2019 after a decade-long project and was officially opened by Olympic champion Heather Stanning. It has a boathouse beneath the main clubhouse and a purpose-built rowing pontoon; the wider facility includes rowing machines, weights, a kitchen and a small bar.

Current routes include crew Learn to Row, recreational water sessions, racing squads, offshore training and indoor rowing. The club also provides home-school indoor sessions and maintains separate rowing and indoor results archives.

Kenny Chalk became a World Masters single-sculls champion in 2017. That year Dave Manns and Rob Maltby entered the Guinness record book after rowing 160 miles along the Thames in under 30 hours. In 2024, junior members completed a 100-kilometre relay to raise funds for the club's 1881 Fund.
