About this club
Southsea Rowing Club is a coastal rowing club based on the seafront at Southsea in Portsmouth. It was formed in 1860 by four amateur oarsmen and says it has occupied its present site since that year.
During the Second World War its clubhouse was used as an officers' mess by an anti-aircraft battery on Southsea Common. The army repeatedly protected the boathouse from firebombs, and one bomb passed through a boat without exploding.
A fire destroyed the boathouse, boats and equipment in 1959. Portsmouth's Lord Mayor opened the replacement clubhouse in 1960; the serving Lord Mayor remains club president and presents prizes at the annual Southsea Regatta.
The club accepts complete novices as well as experienced rowers. It belongs to both the Hants and Dorset Amateur Rowing Association and the Coast Amateur Rowing Association, races at regattas along the south coast, and operates as a Community Amateur Sports Club.
Its junior programme starts at age 13, and recreational members can row without committing to a full racing programme. Members train on weekday evenings and weekend mornings, while race crews contest early-season head races and 2,000-metre regattas from May to September.
Southsea's published results include a Coast Junior-Senior Fours championship in 1949 and the Hants and Dorset Junior-Senior Fours title in 1955. Each summer its home regatta welcomes clubs from both regional associations, while the club also runs social events including its annual Oarsman supper.
