About this club

Swanage Sea Rowing Club is the Cornish pilot gig club for Swanage, rowing on Swanage Bay and nearby coastal water. It is based at Marshall Row, Swanage, Dorset, BH19 2FA and is registered as charitable incorporated organisation 1155689.

The club has more than 120 members and operates five Cornish pilot gigs, six rowing machines and its boathouse at Marshall Row. It belongs to the Cornish Pilot Gig Association and is an affiliate member of British Rowing.

For more than ten years the club worked from a polytunnel on private land behind the Old Pier Head. It began seeking a permanent base in 2008, working with Swanage Town Council before selecting the site opposite its temporary store for the present boathouse.

The programme covers junior rowing from age 12, competitive men's and women's crews, social rowing and community sessions. Competitive crews train for events including the World Pilot Gig Championships on the Isles of Scilly and the men's and women's championships at Newquay, while social rowing runs throughout the year.

Beginners can take a free taster before a six-session learn-to-row course combining land and water instruction. Members can book the club's boats and indoor equipment, and the club supports members who want to train as coxes or coaches.

Swanage hosts an annual summer regatta and the CPGA SuperVets championships. Its community work includes sessions with The Swanage School, a novice Carnival Row during carnival week, an indoor rowing competition and fundraising activity during RNLI Lifeboat Week.
