What is a Rigger?

The rigger is the outrigger arm bolted to the side of a rowing shell that carries the pin out beyond the hull. Sykes wing rigger geometry, span and spread numbers, pin pitch, gearing, and what the boatsmith does in the fortnight before Penrith champs week.

What the rigger actually is

The rigger is the triangulated metal arm bolted to the gunwale (the top edge of the hull) that sticks the pin out past the side of the boat. The oar pivots on that pin. Without the rigger the rower has no lever, because the oar would have nowhere to fulcrum against. Standard rigging pushes the pivot point 70 to 90cm out from the centreline of the hull, which is the gearing window most Aussie programmes train inside.

Around the boatshed the rigger gets called the "rig". A loose rig is a loose rigger. "Derigging" is the routine job of pulling the rigger off the shell before loading a trailer to drive a sweep VIII up the Hume to Penrith, or a single down to Lake Barrington for the Tasmanian rounds. Riggers ride flat on top of the boat or in a separate cradle, and the bolts get bagged and labelled per seat so reassembly on the bank does not become a guessing game.

Anatomy of the rigger

Four bits, each one tuneable, each one a replaceable wear item:

  • Pin: the upright stainless-steel post that the swivel runs on. The pin carries the pitch, which is set with shims or by rotating the pin housing. Touch the pin lean and the whole catch and release shift with it.
  • Swivel (oarlock): the plastic U that wraps the oar and rotates around the pin. The gate clamps shut over the top so the oar cannot lift out mid-stroke. The swivel is what translates the rower's pull into work against the pin.
  • Sleeve: the moulded plastic collar around the oar shaft that bears on the swivel face. The sleeve belongs to the oar, not the rigger, but it has to match the swivel. Croker (the Sydney-based oar builder used across most GPS and AGSV sheds) ships sleeves to suit both Concept2 Smoothie and Concept2 Macon swivels, plus Croker's own profile.
  • Button: the clamp-style plastic shoulder on the oar shaft that holds the oar against the inboard face of the swivel. Slide the button along and the inboard length changes - which is a rigging change, not an oar change, and it shifts the gearing every bit as much as moving the pin.

What the riggers are built from

Most club riggers in Aussie sheds are anodised aluminium. Cheap, stiff for the weight, easy to true on the bank if a seat catches a crab and tweaks the front stay. The anodising layer matters on the coast - Sydney harbour, Brisbane River and Perth saltwater sessions chew through bare alloy in a single season. A boatsmith with a long ruler and an open mind can usually pull a bent aluminium rigger straight enough to send back out before the morning row.

The next tier up is carbon. Stiffer per gram, lighter on the bow ball, but unrepairable if it cracks - one knock against the dock and the rigger is firewood. Sykes builds aluminium aircraft-tube wing riggers across most of their racing range, so plenty of national-level Aussie crews still race aluminium for the toughness; Hudson, Empacher, Filippi, Wintech and Vespoli all offer carbon options at the top of their racing fleets, normally seen on elite sculling singles and lightweight doubles where every gram on the bow ball is being chased.

Rigging numbers Aussie crews actually use

The boatsmith works to a handful of numbers per shell. Standard openweight setpoints worth starting from:

  • Height of work: the gap between the lowest point of the seat and the bottom of the swivel. Sweep usually lands around 16 to 17cm. Sculling sits a touch lower, around 14 to 16cm. Drop too low and the hands smash into the lap at the finish. Lift too high and the catch turns awkward and the blade sky-hooks.
  • Span (sculling) / Spread (sweep): span is the distance pin-to-pin across a sculling boat, usually around 159cm. Spread is the distance from the centreline of the hull to the pin on a sweep rigger, sitting around 86 to 88cm. Open the number and the gearing gets lighter and the catch shifts further out. Close it and the gearing loads up.
  • Pitch: the lean on the pin. Stern pitch (the pin leaning toward the back of the boat) runs around 4 degrees. Lateral pitch (the pin leaning toward the rower) sits at 0 to 1 degrees. Overall pitch as the blade enters the water typically lands at 6 to 7 degrees at the pin. Get the pitch wrong and the catch grabs or skies and the release washes out.
  • Work-through and foot stretcher: work-through is how far the pin sits ahead of the front stop of the seat slide; standard sweep numbers are 1 to 3cm of work-through behind the pin. Slide the foot stretcher toward the bow for more compression at the catch, toward the stern for a longer finish. Most clubs paint marks on the stretcher rails so the change is repeatable seat-to-seat.

Every rigging change cascades. Drop the height of work and the pitch reads differently against the new pin angle. Tighten the span and the gearing climbs, so the rate window the crew can hold drops a beat or two. The discipline most Aussie squads run is a rigging book per boat, the dimensions recorded in pencil so the boatsmith can roll a setup back when a Friday tweak fails by Saturday's seat-race.

Keeping the rig honest

The boring side of the sport, and the one that costs the most when it slips. Pins want a smear of grease every couple of months so the swivel keeps spinning freely. The bolts that anchor the rigger to the gunwale or wing deck get checked before every outing - a single bolt missed will let the rigger walk under load, bend the frame and bin the row. Salt-water clubs from Drummoyne to Sandringham push that check schedule tighter, because brine accelerates corrosion on the bolt threads and pin shaft.

Swivels and sleeves are wear items. The moment grooves show on the bearing face or the gate has play, they go in the bin. The Sykes-style wing rigger has fewer fasteners than a traditional back-stay arm but the ones it has carry more load, so the boatsmith's torque routine matters even more. The rigging-related faults that bite a crew first

Most "weird stroke that came out of nowhere" complaints from the cox or the coach launch turn out to be rigging:

  • Oar squirming in the swivel: the button has loosened or the sleeve has worn down a millimetre. Re-clamp the button or fit a fresh sleeve before the next session - do not row it.
  • Catch grabbing or washing out at the release: the pin pitch has wandered, usually because a pitch change was made without a re-check of the height. Drop a pitch meter on the pin and re-set against the spirit level on the gunwale.
  • Boat tipping one side: spread or span has gone asymmetric, normally after a rigger has been bent and dressed straight by eye rather than measured. Lay a span stick across both pins. If the two sides disagree by more than 1cm, the rigger goes back to the boatsmith.

What does the rigger do on a rowing shell?

The oar itself carries the sleeve (the slippery collar that sits inside the swivel) and the button (the adjustable plastic shoulder that stops the oar sliding through). Move the button and the inboard length shifts. Move the pin and the height, pitch or work-through shifts.

What rigging numbers do Aussie crews start from?

A sensible opening setup for an openweight Aussie crew sits around 86 to 88cm spread for sweep, 159cm span for sculling, 16 to 17cm height of work, 4 degrees stern pitch and 0 to 1 degrees lateral pitch, with overall pitch at the pin running 6 to 7 degrees. Schools 1st VIIIs from GPS, AGSV and CAS programmes usually trial-row a few seat-races at the squad number before any seat asks for a tweak. Lightweights, juniors and masters drift lower on height and tighter on span.

Sykes wing rigger or traditional back-stay rigger - what is the difference?

A traditional back-stay rigger is a triangulated frame of round tube that braces forward, sideways and aft against the gunwale, the pattern you see on most Empacher, Filippi, Hudson and Wintech boats. The Sykes wing rigger swaps that for a single aircraft-grade aluminium tube swept over the back of the rower, anchored to the deck rather than the gunwale. The wing weighs less for the same stiffness, cleans up the airflow at racing speed and clears the rower behind on a sculling boat. Most Aussie squads will have rowed in both - the geometry numbers are identical, only the shape that carries them changes.

How is the rigger looked after across a club fleet?

A club rigger or boatsmith oversees the fleet, often a senior rower or volunteer with a calliper, pitch meter, span stick and a tidy box of allen keys. Pins get a film of grease every couple of months. Every bolt that holds the rigger to the hull is torque-checked before each outing, because a loose rigger on the second stroke off the pontoon will end the row and the season for that hull. Swivels and sleeves get pulled and binned the moment they show a worn groove. A big Aussie shed will see a boatsmith tune 30-plus shells in the fortnight before championships week at Penrith or Lake Barrington.
