The Concept2 Logbook ranks scores after the bodyweight handicap (raw time times (lb over 270) to the power 0.222) and the age-grade coefficient have been applied, so a 70 kg masters sculler and a 95 kg under-23 openweight can be compared on the same percentile band. How the bodyweight handicap and age-grade rebuild a percentile
The Concept2 bodyweight handicap formula
Concept2 publishes the equation as handicapped time = raw time * (bodyweight in lb / 270)^0.222. The 270 lb anchor sits between an openweight man near 210 to 220 lb (roughly 95 to 100 kg) and a lightweight near 155 to 160 lb (around 70 to 73 kg), so the correction pulls both groups onto common ground. The 0.222 exponent was fitted on tens of thousands of Logbook entries and reflects the empirical truth that on a static Concept2 a heavier athlete enjoys some extra purchase through the drive but the gain scales gently with mass, not linearly.
In practice that means a 70 kg sculler on 6:30 grades to roughly 6:14, which slots her onto the same Concept2 Logbook percentile band as a 95 kg openweight on the same raw 6:30. Skip the handicap and lightweights look pedestrian on standings sheets even when, watt for kilo, they are pulling the squad. Rowing Australia uses this same correction when comparing lightweight and heavyweight 2k trials going into King's Cup selection, and AGSV, CAS and GPS coaches use it to keep schoolboy lightweight and heavyweight squads on one ranking ladder.
Concept2 age-grade coefficients (the masters correction)
The Concept2 Logbook publishes the age-grade coefficient table that Australian Masters Rowing Championships uses across the A to K age brackets. Below 30 the factor is 1.000 and the raw time is the standings number. From 30 onward the coefficient grows. Age 40 is around 1.034. Age 50 sits near 1.110. Age 60 lands at roughly 1.200. Age 70 is close to 1.320. A 55-year-old M1x sculler on 7:00 over 2k grades down to roughly 6:14, which places her in a top-decile band on the open Logbook distribution and tells the coach the engine is genuinely senior-squad calibre.
Masters scullers should read the age-graded number the way masters runners read WMA grading. Raw time is what the monitor logged, graded time is what that effort would have produced at peak athletic age, and standings comparisons across age brackets need the graded figure to be honest. Both numbers are useful for tracking, but only the graded figure belongs on a percentile band.
Stacking both corrections for the final percentile
The two corrections multiply, and the multiplication is commutative: raw time times bodyweight factor times age factor equals raw time times age factor times bodyweight factor. The standings bands behind this tool are stitched together from the public Concept2 Logbook age-and-weight distributions, Rowing Australia development and senior squad testing standards, AGSV, CAS and GPS 1st VIII trial sheets that programmes share each season, the Australian Schools Championships entry data, and recent Australian Rowing Championships A and B final ergo screens. They are honest bands, not lab-grade quantiles. The Logbook sample skews toward people who care enough to log, so the absolute population behind a "top decile" claim is the logging population rather than every Aussie who has ever sat on a slide. For squad standings that is the right reference. For population-level claims, read the band with the usual selection-bias caveat.
What this tool will not pretend to do
A handicap does not override federation lightweight rules. Rowing Australia's lightweight cap (75 kg openweight, 72.5 kg lightweight crew average for sweep, lower for singles) governs racing eligibility regardless of how kind the bodyweight formula is on your ergo standings. The tool also has nothing to say about boat speed. On-water times answer to rigging, water state, crew sync and stroke length, and a sparkling Concept2 score is necessary but not sufficient for a fast crew off the Penrith pontoon.
