Beach sprint rowing in Aotearoa: the LA 2028 discipline explained

Beach sprint rowing is a bilateral knockout format on open water: two athletes line up at the top of a beach, sprint barefoot to a coastal shell moored at the waterline, row roughly 250 metres out around a single turn buoy, row back to the beach, drag the hull clear of the water, and sprint up the sand to slap a finish flag. First flag struck advances. The Olympic events at LA 2028 use the C1x coastal solo scull for men and women. This is the first entirely new rowing discipline added to the Games since the women's eight at Montreal 1976. Aotearoa is unusually well-positioned for the discipline: thousands of kilometres of coastline, strong surf lifesaving and waka ama culture feeding water-confident athletes, and Rowing NZ's Coastal initiative building a proper domestic calendar through 2026 and 2027 ahead of Oceanian qualifying for LA 2028.

When the IOC confirmed beach sprint rowing for LA 2028 in October 2023, plenty of flat-water rowers in Aotearoa - myself included - went looking for a clear explainer and mostly came back with press releases and race reports. Beach sprint is genuinely different from coastal rowing more broadly: a much shorter discipline, raced bilaterally on open water with a barefoot sprint on sand bookending the rowing leg. I have not raced it. I have spent the past few months working through World Rowing's rules and every Beach Sprint Finals broadcast I could find, which is the gap this article fills. The New Zealand context is the part that matters most for Kiwi readers. Aotearoa's coastline is unusually suited to the format. Whangamata on the Coromandel, the Bay of Plenty around Tauranga, Lyall Bay and Worser Bay on Wellington's south coast, Lyttelton Harbour's entrance, and several Otago beaches all carry the conditions beach sprint needs. RNZ's Coastal initiative is building toward a national selection pathway through 2026 before the Oceanian LA 2028 qualifying cycle opens.

The run-row-run format up close

Every beach sprint race is a head-to-head. Two athletes (or two crews) stand beside each other behind a finish flag pushed into the sand at the top of the beach. The signal fires, and both sprint barefoot down to a coastal hull moored at the waterline with the bow already aimed at the open sea. They climb in, shove off, and begin rowing.

The rowing leg covers around 250 metres out to a turn buoy and 250 metres back. The moment the bow scrapes the sand on return, the athlete bails out, drags the hull far enough up the beach to stop it floating off, and sprints uphill to strike the finish flag. First flag hit advances. At World Rowing level, total elapsed time typically sits between 90 seconds and three minutes depending on how much chop and wind the course is dealing with that day.

Three phases, three places the race can flip

  • The beach sprint down. A 20 to 30 metre barefoot dash on sand from the finish flag down to the boat. Sand condition varies dramatically: packed and quick after a cool morning, loose and heavy in afternoon heat. A single metre lost here can mean a boat-length disadvantage at the launch into any surf.
  • The row. Roughly 250 metres out, turn the buoy, 250 metres back. Launching cleanly through any shore break is the first technical hurdle. The buoy turn is where races tighten or open up - a sharp controlled turn with good boat lean is worth several lengths. Running wide of the buoy, stalling on the turn, or worse hitting it, hands the race to the other lane.
  • The beach sprint up. Dismount as the bow grinds sand, drag the hull clear, then push legs that have just rowed hard back up to the flag. Sand is wet and heavy underfoot at this stage. Leads change hands here regularly. The athlete first to the beach at bow-on-beach is not always the athlete first to slap the flag.

The draw is structured as a knockout: round of 32, round of 16, quarters, semis, final. One loss and the day is done. That format is exactly why beach sprint reads on television the way downhill mountain biking or alpine ski racing reads: short, decisive, one winner visible immediately.

How it ended up on the LA 2028 programme

The IOC executive board added coastal rowing beach sprint to the LA 2028 schedule in October 2023, in the same decision that brought flag football, lacrosse, cricket, squash and softball/baseball into that Games. The medal programme for beach sprint covers men's and women's C1x solo events, which adds two fresh gold medals to rowing and expands the Olympic rowing programme from 14 events to 16. World Rowing has been pushing for the inclusion since around 2018.

The argument for adding beach sprint rests on two things: broadcastability and host-city fit. A flat-water 2000m race is genuinely difficult to cover on television because the parallel lanes prevent contact and overtaking, with the finish happening in seconds after six and a half minutes of action. Beach sprint runs in under three minutes, involves a visible sprint on sand, a surf launch, a tight buoy turn and another sprint uphill. Every phase reads cleanly on camera from the shore. That is a different proposition for broadcast rights holders.

Southern California suits the format. The coastline, the surf culture, and the lifeguard infrastructure all fit a beach-based water sport. World Rowing confirmed Long Beach as the flat-water rowing venue. The coastal beach sprint site is still being finalised at time of writing. For Kiwi athletes, the Oceanian qualification picture means Pan-Pacific and Oceanian qualifying events form the primary route through. Expect RNZ to coordinate closely with Rowing Australia on regional qualifier logistics across 2026 and 2027.

The coastal hull classes

Coastal hulls form a distinct equipment class from flat-water racing shells. They are beamier, heavier, more buoyant, and engineered for open water with swell and breaking waves. The naming convention uses a C prefix across the entire class range:

  • C1x (coastal single scull). The Olympic event boat at LA 2028. Around 6 metres in length with a beam close to 75cm - compare that to a flat-water 1x at roughly 27cm. The C1x carries a rounded self-bailing hull designed to shed water taken on during a beach launch rather than hold it.
  • C2x (coastal double scull). Two scullers, raced as same-sex or mixed events. Standard at World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals and at most national coastal championships. Likely to enter a future Olympic programme if the discipline keeps growing.
  • C4x+ (coastal coxed quad). Four scullers plus a coxswain who is also required to run the beach legs. Cox steering at the buoy turn is decisive at this boat size. The C4x+ is the largest class raced in beach sprint competition.
  • Specifications. Minimum hull weights and dimensions are fixed by World Rowing in the Rules of Racing. Active builders in the coastal market include Filippi, Salani, Liteboat, Virus and Swift. Several now offer purpose-built beach sprint hulls with reinforced bows for sand launches and integrated self-bailing footwells.

A standard flat-water single cannot be pressed into beach sprint service. The hull is too narrow to handle the open-water motion, the rigger geometry assumes still conditions, and the carbon finish will not survive a beach launch. Kiwi clubs serious about beach sprint need to invest in dedicated coastal equipment.

Beach sprint vs offshore coastal

Both formats sit inside World Rowing's coastal category and use the same hull classes. Beyond that shared equipment base, they are different sports - different enough that athletes who excel at one rarely compete seriously in the other.

  • Distance. Offshore coastal races cover 4km to 6km of open water. Beach sprint is roughly 500m of rowing sandwiched between two barefoot beach runs, total elapsed time under three minutes.
  • Start format. Offshore coastal uses a mass start with every entered hull launching together. Beach sprint is a bilateral head-to-head, two hulls only, launched from the beach on a signal.
  • Course. Offshore courses loop around multiple buoys, often in genuine swell. Beach sprint is a single out-and-back to one buoy in the surf zone, in conditions that World Rowing's safety officer must approve before racing proceeds.
  • Skill profile. Offshore coastal demands sustained aerobic endurance, open-water boat handling, and sometimes navigational judgment. Beach sprint demands explosive short power, barefoot sprinting on variable sand, and precise buoy-turn technique.
  • Olympic status. Beach sprint enters the Olympic programme at LA 2028. Offshore coastal stays as the dedicated format for marathon coastal competition and is not part of the current Olympic rowing schedule.

Both formats use the same hulls under the same coastal rules and yet attract very different athletes. A Kiwi masters rower who specialises in 5km offshore endurance work is unlikely to be a beach sprint finalist. The sprint format rewards a physiology closer to a 100m track athlete who also happens to scull cleanly.

The international calendar and Oceanian qualifying

Beach sprint already runs a developed international circuit. The pathway looks like this:

World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals. The annual world championships for beach sprint, run by World Rowing. Past hosts include Oeiras (Portugal), Saundersfoot (Wales) and Genoa (Italy). All C1x, C2x and C4x+ events are raced. This is the highest-stakes beach sprint event in the calendar.

World Rowing Beach Sprint World Series. A multi-event circuit launched to spread the discipline and seed qualification rankings into LA 2028. Athletes accumulate ranking points across the series.

Continental championships. Oceanian and Pan-Pacific coastal events, European Rowing Coastal Championships, and Asian continental events. Oceanian events are the primary continental qualifier for Kiwi athletes, with Rowing Australia as the regional co-organiser. Expect joint Trans-Tasman fixtures through 2026 and 2027.

National championships. RNZ coastal events for New Zealand and Rowing Australia coastal events across the Tasman. National titles feed national-team selection. RowIT handles regatta entries for RNZ-affiliated events.

Olympic qualification for LA 2028 has not been fully finalised at time of writing. The expected shape is Oceanian and continental qualification regattas through 2027, a Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in early 2028, and quota places allocated to countries (not athletes), with each country running its own internal selection trial. Expect more clarity from World Rowing and RNZ through 2026 and 2027.

How a Kiwi coastal club starts

If your club operates within reach of the coast - on Auckland's harbours, Wellington Harbour or the south coast, the Coromandel, the Bay of Plenty, Canterbury's Lyttelton entrance, or Otago and Southland - the setup cost is lower than a typical flat-water programme because only a small fleet is needed to begin. The realistic sequence:

  1. Check your launch access. Local councils, harbour masters and Maritime NZ all have a say on club waterway use. If your target beach falls inside a Surf Life Saving NZ patrolled zone, talk to the local surf club before assuming the surf zone is available. Many beaches have established patrol jurisdictions that need coordinating with.
  2. Hire before buying. Filippi, Liteboat and Swift all run hire arrangements. A weekend hire of two C1x and a C2x lets you and your members try the format before committing capital. Elite Fitness NZ and Sportlab Rowing can help source hire arrangements within Aotearoa.
  3. Send a couple of athletes to an open coastal event. RNZ and Rowing Australia both list coastal fixtures. Watching the format live tells you more in two hours than any video can.
  4. Run a club-internal beach sprint day. Pick a calm summer weekend, hire two boats, set up a turn buoy, and run a knockout bracket among the members. The mood shift from this one session is usually how clubs end up adopting the discipline.
  5. Buy your first dedicated boat. Most clubs that go past the trial stage buy a C1x first (lowest risk, single seat) and add a C2x later. C4x+ comes only once squad depth supports it.

On the logistics side, the operational pattern is similar to flat-water. Running an open event still needs entries, draw construction, conditions monitoring, safety boats and a results board. The session-management discipline you already use for flat-water carries over. What changes is the venue and the hulls.

The Aotearoa coastal scene and RNZ Coastal

Rowing New Zealand has been actively building its coastal rowing programme alongside the LA 2028 Olympic build. New Zealand's geography is almost uniquely suited to the discipline. Both main islands carry accessible coastal water and surf beaches within reach of established rowing clubs. Auckland's Waitemata Harbour and the Manukau Harbour both deliver genuine open-water conditions. Whangamata on the Coromandel offers classic beach sprint terrain with surf lifesaving infrastructure already in place. Wellington Harbour with its Cook Strait winds, and the south coast at Lyall Bay and Worser Bay, suit experienced coastal crews. Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty surf coast, Lyttelton Harbour's entrance into the open Pacific, and several Otago and Southland beaches all carry the conditions a beach sprint course needs.

New Zealand's wider water culture matters here. Surf lifesaving, waka ama, ocean kayaking and surfing all produce water-confident athletes who can cross into coastal rowing with the right introduction. Waka ama paddlers in particular share the beach-launch culture that defines beach sprint and are an obvious recruitment crossover for any Kiwi coastal rowing club. The flagship inland championship at Lake Karapiro remains the centrepiece of the domestic season, but the RNZ Coastal initiative is building a separate coastal calendar that runs in parallel.

For Kiwi athletes targeting LA 2028, the realistic pathway is RNZ coastal events through 2026 and 2027, Oceanian beach sprint competitions across the same period, then the Oceanian continental qualifier and the Olympic Qualification Regatta in early 2028. RNZ is the right contact for athletes wanting to be considered for development squads. Expect more clarity through 2026 and 2027 as World Rowing publishes the formal qualification criteria and RNZ confirms its domestic selection framework.

Watching a race

If you have only ever watched flat-water racing, beach sprint reads completely differently on the day. Three distinct phases, each with its own decision point where the lead can flip. The three things every race comes down to:

  • The beach start. Focus on the barefoot sprint down to the hulls. A single metre at the waterline determines who launches first, and launching a split-second earlier into even a small shore break means a clean exit versus a swamped bow. The start run sets the tone for the entire race.
  • The buoy turn. The most important technical moment of any beach sprint race. A tightly executed turn with the correct boat lean through the corner is worth multiple boat lengths. Carry too much speed in, hit the buoy, run wide on the arc, or stall momentum through the turn and the race swings in a single moment.
  • The beach finish. Both athletes arrive back at the sand with heavily fatigued legs from the rowing leg. The final run up to the flag is where leads change hands more often than anywhere else. How cleanly the athlete exits the boat, how firmly they set the hull on the sand, and how much they have left in their legs determines the result more reliably than the margin at the bow-on-beach moment.

World Rowing broadcasts Beach Sprint Finals coverage on its YouTube channel, with free-to-air partnerships depending on the host country. At LA 2028, beach sprint enters the full Olympic broadcast package.
