About this club

Hawkes Bay Rowing Club rows on the Clive River from its shed on Farndon Road in Clive, Hawke's Bay. The club takes rowers of all skill levels, offers both sweep and sculling, and the water can be rowed for most of the year.

A five-week schools Learn to Row programme is open to students in year 9 and above. Those who carry on join the season as novice or development rowers, training four days a week and racing at regattas around the central North Island. A masters programme caters for rowers aged 27 and over, from beginners to competitive crews.

The club began as the Napier Rowing Club, based in Ahuriri, which merged with the Union club. After the 1931 earthquake its building was moved to Clive, and the club took the Hawkes Bay Rowing Club name in the late 1950s. The current main shed was built in the early 1970s and extended in the 1980s.

A club senior eight won the New Zealand title in 1980-81, and the club has produced Olympians and national representatives. It held its 150th annual general meeting in May 2026, and Emma Twigg is the club patron.
