Invercargill Rowing Club rows on the Oreti River from clubrooms on Sandy Point Road, Invercargill. The river gives more than 7km of rowable water in two directions from the clubrooms, and the surrounding Sandy Point Domain is used for land training alongside the gym in the clubrooms.
Members include students from James Hargest College, Verdon College, Southland Girls High School and Southland Boys High School, as well as adaptive, masters and recreational rowers. The club supports school age novices, competition rowers, recreational and masters rowers, and adaptive and Special Olympics rowers. Rowing can be seasonal, or year round with winter land training and monthly long-distance races.
The club was established on 26 August 1875 with clubrooms on the New River Estuary and moved to the Oreti River in 1958. Facilities were expanded in 1983, when the first women members joined, a boat storage shed was added in 2005, and the clubrooms were upgraded and extended in 2010.
Club members have become Maadi Cup, national and international champions, and several have won gold medals at the World Rowing Championships and Olympic Games.
