James Hargest College rowing is run from the school's senior campus in Invercargill. Crews row in Terms 1 and 4 and race at the South Island Secondary Schools Championships and the Maadi Cup. Rowers buy their own row suit, and some suits are available through the school.
In 2026 rowing was added as a new option in the junior campus sport and recreation rotations.
At the 2026 Maadi Cup on Lake Ruataniwha near Twizel, a James Hargest girls' under 18 double sculls crew won its C final, an under 16 double sculls crew placed fourth in its C final and an under 16 coxed quad finished third in its D final. At the 2024 South Island Secondary Schools Championships 23 students raced, 14 crews reached the repechages and the under 15 eight finished seventh in its A final.
