St Andrew Boat Club was founded at 17 Atholl Crescent, Edinburgh, on 24 April 1846. It describes itself as Scotland's oldest open amateur rowing club and the sixth oldest in the United Kingdom.
The club is based at Meggetland beside the Union Canal, where members train mainly on the roughly 1,500-metre stretch between Polwarth and Craiglockhart. A towpath alongside the water allows coaches to follow crews.
St Andrew welcomes junior, senior, masters, recreational and competitive rowers and scullers. Its current contacts include separate coordinators for senior and junior learn-to-row programmes, reflecting the club's Rowing for All approach. The club has operated as registered Scottish charity SC045608 since May 2015, with the purpose of widening rowing participation in Edinburgh and the surrounding area.
The club records international representation at the 1958 Empire Games and the 1986 and 1994 Commonwealth regattas. Athletes associated with it include Olympic champion Katherine Grainger and international rower Sinead Jennings Lynch.
Scottish Rowing named St Andrew Club of the Year in 2024, recognising its community role and performance across the squads. Anna Fisher and Maia Hely were also named Crew of the Year after their results that season.
