Oxford University Boat Club is the university's high-performance rowing programme. Established in 1829 to win the Boat Race, it is run by annually elected student presidents with staff that include chief coaches for the men's and women's squads.

The first Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race was held at Henley-on-Thames on 10 June 1829, and Oxford won. The second race followed in London in 1836 after a period in which contests were not yet annual.

Oxford University Women's Boat Club was established in 1927. Men's lightweight racing against Cambridge began in 1975, followed by the first women's lightweight race at Henley in 1984. Ahead of the 2024 race, those four legacy programmes united under a single OUBC structure approved by the university.

OUBC's development squad is open to full-time matriculated Oxford students preparing to trial for the main squad. The club advises students new to rowing to gain at least a year in their college first eight before trialling, while Boat Race eligibility requires enrolment on a full-time university course.

Water training takes place from the Fleming Boathouse at Wallingford on about ten kilometres of the Thames. Land training is at Iffley Road in Oxford, where a rowing gym contains free weights, cycling machines, more than 20 dynamic rowing machines and a rowing tank.

The club lists Olympic champions Matthew Pinsent, Andy Triggs Hodge, Peter Reed, Constantine Louloudis and Mark and Mike Evans among rowers who became Olympic champions after rowing for OUBC. Its 2026 results included a three-length win in the Women's Boat Race, while Cambridge won the men's race by three and a half lengths.

Openweight and lightweight men and women now represent the same club, but the Boat Race remains OUBC's defining competition. This high-performance route is distinct from Oxford's inter-college rowing system, which provides separate college-level participation and racing.
