Honolulu Rowing Club operates out of the McCully Street Boathouse in Ala Wai Community Park on Kapiolani Boulevard, Honolulu.
The club's boats are singles and doubles, kept at the park, and it runs an open sculling schedule with weekend sessions on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons. Visitors row under a guest waiver.
The club also documents the history of the sport in Hawai'i, and it is a genuinely old one. Rowing arrived in the islands in the late 1860s. The first account of competitive rowing appeared in the Pacific Commercial Advertiser of 16 December 1871, reporting a race between four two-oared boats won by Young America, with what the paper called splendid rowing exhibited. King Kalakaua's birthday on 16 November 1875 marked Hawai'i's first regatta with extensive rowing competition.
The first organised club was the Myrtle Rowing Club, formed in 1883. Interest spread to Maui, where the Puunene Rowing Club was formed in 1912, and by the 1920s there were five rowing clubs in the islands.
