Portland Community Rowing Association

Portland Community Rowing Association is a non-profit on Cutter Street on the Portland, Maine waterfront, set up to give community members the chance to take up rowing for instruction, training, recreation and competition.

Newcomers come in through learn-to-row and novice sessions. The club's coaches work with rowers from complete novice to experienced, and are explicit that they support whatever the rower is after, whether that is recreational rowing or racing.

The club is candid about how much of it runs on volunteers. Launch drivers are described as vital to the organisation: the club provides and fuels the launch, and the driver is what makes it safe for crews to be on the water at all. Volunteer coxswains are recruited the same way.

PCRA names its founders publicly on the site, which is a small thing but says something about how a community club of this size remembers where it came from.
