Rose City Rowing Club was founded in 2004 to introduce Portland's young people to rowing and to the Willamette running through their city.
Its mission is to encourage and empower young adults to become capable, confident people, within the framework of a nationally competitive, team-oriented rowing programme.
The club's reach across the city is its most striking feature: participants come from 40 different schools and more than 30 zip codes. That spread is deliberate, and it makes the club a genuinely city-wide programme rather than a catchment one.
Athletes range from middle-schoolers coming out for a paddle a couple of times a week through to world-class veteran competitors. With an athlete-to-coach ratio of roughly ten to one, the club says every athlete gets regular daily feedback.
Its stated vision is that the programme should be a primer for a lifetime of enjoyment in the sport rather than an end in itself.
