About this club
Shannon Rowing Club was founded on the River Shannon in Limerick in 1866. The club's city premises are at Sarsfield Bridge, Limerick, V94 TK37, and it also operates a rowing base at Annacotty.
A group of business people and rowing supporters established the club with Father J. Purcell and Limerick mayor Sir Peter Tait. The club occupied premises at 48 Thomas Street in the late nineteenth century before opening a purpose-designed Sarsfield Bridge clubhouse in the early 1900s.
Shannon's early championship record includes an intermediate eight in 1945 and a CBS maiden eight in 1954. In 1973 a junior four won an Irish trial and represented Ireland at the FISA World Championships in Nottingham.
The club moved its rowing activity to Annacotty in 2008 after changed flow near Sarsfield Bridge had made regular launching difficult. Its new Annacotty boathouse was completed in 2018.
Shannon records 26 national championship wins. Four came in 2024: a women's senior pair and intermediate double, plus members of composite senior eight and senior quad crews.
Membership includes adults and masters, juniors, families and a new-junior Get Rowing programme. Adult and junior memberships include full use of rowing and gym facilities, while the introductory programme covers new juniors from September to November.
The club remains active across large team entries. It sent 79 athletes in 30 crews to Cork Head of the River in 2024, including about 15 juniors attending their first event, and recorded wins in masters, intermediate, club and junior races.
