About this club

Clifton Rowing Club rows on the Waitara River from its clubrooms at the corner of Richmond and Leslie Streets in Waitara, Taranaki. The club was formed on 14 October 1888 by members who left the Waitara Boating Club, partly because its rules banned rowing on Sundays.

It offers learn-to-row lessons for newcomers, competitive school and club rowing, non-competitive rowing, masters rowing for those aged 27 and over, and corporate team-building events. Affiliated schools are New Plymouth Boys High School, New Plymouth Girls High School, Francis Douglas Memorial College, Spotswood College, Sacred Heart Girls College and Waitara High School. Training times depend on the tides.

Clifton crews won the New Zealand men's coxed four title in 1938 and 1939. Ray Laurent and Peter Lucas represented New Zealand at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, and the club won the senior men's coxed four at the 1957 national championships.

The club opened a new boatshed on the east side of the river on 8 December 1951, and women were officially admitted as members in 1972.
