About this club

Swansea University Rowing Club is based on the River Tawe at East Burrows Road in Swansea. It is a student-run club offering rowing from beginner level through to high-performance competition.

University rowing in Swansea began in the 1970s, stopped in the early 1980s, restarted in 1989 and dissolved again around 1995. Tim Stickley revived the present club in 2004 after finding a single river-worthy boat in storage.

SURC has novice men's and women's squads, senior men's and women's squads, and a coxing pathway. New students can use taster sessions or a learn-to-row course, with novices gradually moving from water, land and strength training into racing and later integration with the senior squads.

The club aims to provide at least two structured ergometer sessions, two strength and conditioning sessions and three water sessions each week. Its current membership options include racing, social and learn-to-row routes, and the fleet supports both sweep rowing and sculling.

SURC races at Welsh events, BUCS, the men's and women's Head of the River races, Welsh Varsity and the Henley regattas. The students' union reports that the club retained its varsity title for a third consecutive year in 2025-26, with the senior women's crew winning for the first time.
