About this club
University of Bristol Boat Club is based at Saltford Rowing Centre on the River Avon, between Bristol and Bath. Founded in 1909, the student-run club had around 140 members and an elected committee of 22 when the university profiled it in 2024.
More than half of its members learn to row for the first time. The club describes a high-performance programme, a novice programme for beginners and an Open Club for non-student athletes, while the university says its crews enter the major national rowing events.
The Saltford facility opened in September 2014 after a joint project involving the university, Avon County Rowing Club and Monkton Combe School. The university records a total investment of £1.2 million, while the club has access to Empacher, Hudson and Vespoli boats.
UBBC reported a fleet of around 30 boats in 2024 and said it was wholly self-run. Its Open Club page also lists three professional rowing coaches, an indoor training facility with RP3 and Concept2 machines, coached strength and conditioning, changing facilities, a gym and a club room.
The club runs the UBBC Head Race from Saltford, with divisions for experienced and beginner crews. University reporting also records regular Henley Royal Regatta success, Great Britain representation at European University and under-23 level, and alumna Flo Ward's place in the youngest women's trio to row the Atlantic in 2021.
