The rowing scene in Bristol
Bristol has one of the most unusual rowing scenes in the UK. The mid-city Floating Harbour gives senior clubs and pilot gig crews sheltered, lock-controlled water in the middle of town, while the tidal River Avon below Hanham Lock runs out past Avonmouth into the Bristol Channel for coastal gig rowing. Squads from City of Bristol, Bristol Ariel, Avon County, the two universities and the major schools share a stretch of river that hosts the Bristol Avon Regatta each summer.

Bristol's Floating Harbour is a 70-acre, lock-controlled stretch of sheltered water running through the city centre, created in 1809 to keep the docks navigable as the tidal River Avon rises and falls. It's the country's only major urban rowing venue inside a working harbour. Above Netham Lock the non-tidal Avon stretches up through St Annes, Hanham and on to Saltford and Bath - the home reach of Bristol Ariel, Avon County, the University of Bristol and Monkton Combe. Below Netham the river runs tidal through Avonmouth and out into the Bristol Channel where the pilot gig clubs at Bristol, Portishead and Clevedon race traditional Cornish gigs.
