York St John University Boat Club was established in 1852 and is described by the students' union as the university's oldest sports club. It rows on the River Ouse from its own boathouse near Museum Gardens, about a five-minute walk from the main campus. The boathouse stands between Lendal Bridge and the railway bridge, opposite York City Rowing Club.
The club is mixed-gender and open to students of all abilities. Qualified coaches support regular rowing, fitness and training sessions for members seeking either a new activity or national competition.
A new boathouse opened in 1958. The university's alumni history records that the Ouse has repeatedly flooded the building, while a 170-year club timeline was installed there in 2023.
The competition programme includes local regattas and British Universities and Colleges Sport events. The club also runs social events and promotes participation alongside its competitive pathway.
A university account of the 160th anniversary in 2012 recorded more than 50 members and an Old Johns alumni event. The current students' union page continues to use Boat Club as the official name and describes the same inclusive rowing base close to campus.
