York City Rowing Club is based on West Esplanade beside the River Ouse, close to Lendal Bridge in central York. Its membership service describes a club of around 300 members with a fleet serving junior, senior, masters and leisure rowing.
The club dates its establishment to October 1843. York's first regatta was held that year, and an official racing-and-swimming regatta followed in 1865. The current club address is The Boathouse, West Esplanade, York, YO1 6FZ.
The men's and women's senior squads can train up to eight times a week, while junior training frequency depends on age and experience. Masters outings centre on Sunday mornings, and the Leisure and Progression Group provides a route for members who are less focused on racing.
York says its wins are spread across junior, senior and masters sections and that it has regularly led the British Rowing Almanack for wins in a season. Recorded honours include the Britannia Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta in 2007 and British championship titles in 1976, 2006 and 2008.
The club runs or assists with Yorkshire Head, York Spring Regatta, York Summer Regatta, York Autumn Sculls and York Small Boats Head. City of York Council records confirm that the 2025 Spring and Summer regattas were hosted at the West Esplanade boathouse.
Volunteers and local businesses refurbished the club's bar and balcony in 2018. British Rowing reported that the reopened space was intended for member socials and private hire, with income supporting the club.
