Potomac Boat Club

Potomac Boat Club sits on the Potomac River in Georgetown, Washington, DC, and is the oldest rowing club in the Washington area. It was founded in 1869 and has been rowing from the same stretch of river ever since.

The club is member-run and home to around 300 senior members. They range from recreational rowers through to Olympic athletes, and the club is explicit that it welcomes both scullers and sweep rowers across a wide span of ages and abilities, from juniors to masters to elite, and from the casual to the obsessed.

Potomac runs several competitive programs for scullers and sweep rowers. Members race as individuals, through a club program, and for the United States national team at events including the World Championships and the Olympic Games.

The club hosted the crew of Washington-Liberty High School in Arlington, one of the first public schools in the country to have a rowing program, for 75 years; as of December 2024 that program is moving to a new location. It runs the Head of the Potomac regatta.

For a club considering how it manages membership, program sign-ups and boat allocation across that many rowers and squads, the mix of independent scullers and coached competitive squads is exactly the kind of complexity that outgrows a spreadsheet.
