The WaterRower is the ash-framed wooden machine that pops up in lifestyle magazines and the lobby gyms of five-star Dublin hotels. Designed in 1988 by John Duke, a Yale engineer and a former US National Rowing Team candidate, built in Warren, Rhode Island and pushed into Ireland through European distribution out of the Netherlands. It pulls a real paddle wheel through a sealed tank of water; the catch feels close to a slide-seat boat and the wash sound is genuinely calming. Taken on its own merits, it is a lovely piece of furniture you can pull hard on - landing around EUR 1,350 for the Original Oak with the S4 Bluetooth Monitor.
Why Irish clubs almost never buy WaterRowers as their primary fleet
The S4 monitor is bare. It reads time, distance, split and stroke rate, and the export story is thin next to ErgData. There is no equivalent of the Concept2 logbook, no recognition at Rowing Ireland or IURC trials, and the drag is fixed by how much water sits in the tank - not per-athlete adjustable and not comparable to a Concept2 drag factor in any meaningful way.
Practically, that means an Inniscarra winter trial 2k posted on a WaterRower cannot be lined up against the IURC sheet, the Irish Champs trialist list, or anybody's historic Concept2 PBs. Half a squad on Concept2 and half on WaterRower delivers two parallel datasets that never reconcile. The machines are not interchangeable for serious measurement, even though they cover similar metres.
When a WaterRower genuinely makes sense in an Irish context
A WaterRower is a strong domestic buy for the rower who wants something quiet and beautiful, will mostly grind steady-state pieces, and is not chasing a position on the national 2k list. A handful of Irish clubs keep one for variety in the corner of the gym; none I know of runs the WaterRower as their primary testing fleet. Hydrow is a connected fitness device with a 16-inch screen on the front and a software-controlled magnetic flywheel inside. The hardware costs around EUR 1,800 in Ireland and the Hydrow Membership runs roughly EUR 50 per month - without which the machine is a very expensive paperweight. Bruce Smith, a former US National Team rowing coach and former Executive Director of Community Rowing in Boston, founded the company in 2017; the business has since raised over USD 300m in venture funding. Read as a connected cardio product, the Wave is a well-built piece of kit and the production value on the classes is high.
Why Hydrow is poor for actual rowing training
The Hydrow stroke profile does not match real rowing. The catch is gentle, the drive curve is software-shaped to look exciting on camera, and the recovery is artificially smooth. A coach watching a development sculler on a Hydrow will catch the bad habits the boat will then have to unlearn - early back swing, weak catch, rushed recovery - none of which translate cleanly to a Filippi at Inniscarra. There is no drag factor, no ErgData export, no Concept2-compatible rankings, and no path into the Rowing Ireland or IURC scoring world.
Hydrow markets itself to home users who want guided cardio with a rowing aesthetic. That is a real and legitimate audience. It is just not the same product as a Concept2. An Irish rowing club buying Hydrows would be the equivalent of a cycling team buying Pelotons instead of road bikes - the data is locked, the technique pattern is wrong, and the recurring subscription bill makes the fleet maths nonsensical.
When a Hydrow genuinely makes sense for an Irish home rower
If a member of your boathouse wants a guided home cardio machine, has the disposable budget, and accepts that their 2k will not appear on the Concept2 World Rankings, fine. Just please do not put one in the club gym and expect to score a Rowing Ireland-comparable test on it. Are WaterRower scores comparable to Concept2 scores at Irish trials?
No. The two machines measure work in different ways, the WaterRower S4 monitor reports distance with a different calibration, and there is no shared rankings system. A 7:00 2k on a WaterRower and a 7:00 2k on a Concept2 are not the same achievement and no Irish selector treats them as comparable. Every Irish performance benchmark - Junior Irish Champs trials, IURC selection, Rowing Ireland Olympic pathway shortlisting - is set on Concept2.
Can I use Hydrow data to track 2k erg progress for Rowing Ireland trials?
Not usefully. Hydrow does not push data into the Concept2 logbook, the resistance is software-managed and not equivalent to a Concept2 drag factor, and the stroke profile is shaped for camera-friendly entertainment rather than physiological accuracy. If your goal is 2k progression toward Rowing Ireland or IURC trials, the test has to land on a Concept2 - even if your day-to-day grinding happens elsewhere.
