How does the Concept2 weight adjustment work?
The Concept2 rule reads adjusted_time = actual_time * (your_weight_in_lbs / 270)^0.222. Everything is measured against a 270lb (122kg) heavyweight anchor, so a 75kg (165lb) rower pulling 7:00 scores 6:30 adjusted. Mass helps on the machine but with diminishing returns, and the exponent models that taper. Irish clubs and university squads use the adjusted figure wherever one ranking must cover every body size.

The Concept2 weight-adjustment formula
adjusted_time = actual_time * (your_weight_in_lbs / 270)^0.222 is the whole calculation, with 270lb as the fixed heavyweight anchor. Light rowers finish ahead of their raw time; heavy rowers give a little back, since part of a big raw score is bought with mass rather than fitness. Why 0.222?
Concept2 fitted 0.222 by regression against a deep pool of World Ranking results. A heavier rower can lean on more absolute force at the flywheel, but the return shrinks as mass climbs: doubling body weight shifts the calculated time by only about 15%. That shallow curve mirrors what shows up between 75kg lightweights and 95kg openweight athletes on ergs from Cork to Galway, junior right through senior.
When this matters most
Anywhere one ladder has to cover several body types: university trials, club rankings on the Lee, the Liffey or the Shannon, and winter erg testing before championship season. A coach filling a lightweight boat can weigh up a 62kg candidate against a 90kg clubmate without raw times deciding it by default. Members chasing personal progress get value too - if your weight moves during the year, the adjusted score shows whether the engine actually improved.
Where the formula breaks down
It presumes a trained erg athlete: an unfit 60kg member will not out-score a conditioned 90kg heavyweight just by formula. Reliability also fades at the extremes, below roughly 130lb or above 250lb, where the source data runs thin. And the maths stops at the machine - on the water, drag and rigging govern shell speed differently, so no lightweight final is ever settled on adjusted times.

Is the bodyweight-adjusted erg score recognised by Rowing Ireland?
Rowing Ireland picks official lightweight crews on raw 2k times inside the category limits of 72.5kg for men and 59kg for women, not on adjusted figures. The adjustment does its real work in the club gym: mixed-weight squad ladders, recruitment scoring and coaching benchmarks. Concept2 publishes the calculation openly and runs it in the World Rankings.
What is the reference weight of 270 lbs?
Concept2 fixed the anchor at 270lb, around 122kg, heavier than nearly any senior heavyweight man on the circuit. With the anchor set that high, the formula takes time off almost everyone who uses it, and lighter rowers collect the biggest credit. The anchor never moves, whatever numbers you enter.
Does the formula work for women?
It does - the calculation reads body weight and nothing else, so it applies equally to women. Fair comparison across genders normally needs a gender or age factor layered on as well; Concept2 keeps its ranking tables separate by gender and applies the weight step inside each. Why does my adjusted time differ from Concept2's online ranking?
The World Rankings stack a second, age-graded step on top of the weight step. A 50-year-old at 75kg with a raw 7:00 sees weight take the score to about 6:30 and age trim it again by bracket. This page runs the weight step only; Concept2's own site produces the fully layered figure.
How much faster does the adjustment make a lightweight's time?
Around 7% for a 75kg (165lb) rower, which converts a raw 7:00 2k into 6:30 adjusted. A 60kg (132lb) rower collects nearer 14%, so 7:30 raw comes back as roughly 6:30. The credit steepens as weight drops and then eases off at the light end, a product of the small exponent.
Should coaches use adjusted or raw scores for crew selection?
Each has its job. Openweight and heavyweight seats are settled on raw 2k, the better proxy for boat-moving power. Lightweight boats race under a weight limit, so raw times within category decide those. The adjusted column comes into play when a single ranking spans an entire mixed squad, and Irish coaches generally print raw and adjusted side by side.
