WaterRower Original Oak: stunning in the lounge, awkward in the shed

The WaterRower is the ash-framed timber unit that turns up in lifestyle magazines, boutique-hotel gyms and luxury Mosman renovations. Designed in 1988 by John Duke - Yale engineer and one-time US National Rowing Team candidate - and built at the original factory in Warren, Rhode Island. The Australian distribution runs out of a Sydney showroom. The paddle wheel pulls through an honest tank of water, the catch feels close to an actual sliding seat, and the swooshing soundtrack is genuinely soothing. Judged on its own terms it is a beautiful object that you can also train hard on - AUD 1,999 for the Original Oak fitted with the S4 Performance Monitor.

Why no serious Aussie club ever fields a WaterRower fleet

The S4 monitor is barely a monitor. It tells you time, distance, split and rate, and that is the lot. No global logbook, no integration with Rowing Australia trials, no hook into the King's Cup or Australian Boat Race selection pipeline, no clean route to the AIS, NSWIS, VIS or QAS testing tables. Drag itself depends on how much you filled the tank with - not adjustable per athlete, not comparable from one machine to the next, and nothing like a Concept2 drag-factor reading.

In practice, this means a captain cannot honestly run a squad-wide 2k on a WaterRower and stack it against historic Concept2 PBs, GPS school recruiting tables, or any state institute squad standard. Mix half a shed of WaterRowers with half a shed of Concept2s and squad selection becomes guesswork. The two machines cover similar distances on paper. They are nowhere near interchangeable for the testing that actually matters.

When a WaterRower genuinely earns its space

A WaterRower is a brilliant home buy for someone who wants a quiet, beautiful piece of timber in the lounge, will mostly chip away at steady-state work, and never needs to line a score up against a national ranking. A handful of Aussie clubs keep one or two around as variety machines, usually because a member donated one. No serious Aussie club, GPS or AGSV school, or university boat club is buying a fleet of them as the primary testing rig. WaterRower has never held a formal partnership with Rowing Australia, and we have not seen a single Aussie programme swap their Concept2s for them.

Hydrow Wave: a Peloton with oars, and barely sold here

Hydrow is a connected-fitness machine. Magnetic flywheel under software control, 16-inch screen running on-demand and live workouts, and a monthly Hydrow Membership without which the whole thing is essentially a coat rack. Founded in 2017 by Bruce Smith - former US National Team rowing coach and former Executive Director of Community Rowing Inc. in Boston - now over USD 300m of venture funding deep. The wrinkle for Aussie buyers: Hydrow runs no direct Australian distribution. PCMag Australia's Wave review opened with "AU price and availability TBC", and the same caveat still applies in 2026. As a piece of connected cardio kit the Wave is well built, but in Australia you are paying grey-import freight, you are off the local warranty grid, and a USD subscription pings your card every month at whatever the AUD has done that week.

Why Hydrow is hopeless for actual rowing training

The stroke profile on a Hydrow is nowhere near a real boat. The catch is soft, the drive is shaped by software to look dramatic on screen, and the recovery is artificially silky. A coach watching a rower on a Hydrow will see them rehearse habits - early back swing, weak front-end loading, rushed recovery - that simply do not transfer to a Filippi, an Empacher, a Hudson or a Sykes. There is no drag factor, no ErgData export and no path into the Concept2 rankings.

Hydrow sells itself to home users who want guided cardio with a rowing aesthetic. That is a real market, and a legitimate one. It is just not the same product category as a Concept2. An Aussie club kitting out the shed with Hydrows would be acting like a cycling team buying Pelotons instead of road bikes - the data is sealed, the technique is wrong, and on local pricing the maths is dead on arrival: roughly AUD 6,081 a unit on Amazon AU before the first subscription payment.

When a Hydrow genuinely stacks up

If a member at your club has the budget, fancies a guided home cardio machine, is happy to wear a grey-import, and does not care that their numbers will never appear in a Concept2 ranking, fair enough. But please do not slot one into the club gym and expect to run usable trials on it. Even the bloke who built Hydrow is honest about the audience - the Evening Standard quote below makes that clear enough.

Three-year cost: side by side

Sticker prices hide the running tab. Concept2 has none. Hydrow tacks on roughly AUD 800 a year of mandatory USD-billed subscription on top of the grey-import hardware. Here is what each machine costs to own across three years in Australia, before a single part or repair:

Stretch the picture across a 15-year fleet horizon - the realistic working life of a Concept2 at Sydney Uni Boat Club, Mosman, Mercantile Melbourne, Banks, UTS Rowers or any sustained Aussie programme - and the gap turns silly. A Concept2 lands at roughly AUD 114 per machine per year. A Hydrow over the same window, factoring in USD subscription and ongoing FX risk, blows past AUD 18,000 per machine and still cannot deliver a squad-comparable trial.
