About this club
St Joseph's College Rowing Club is the rowing club of St Joseph's Patrician College, widely known as The Bish, on Nun's Island in Galway. The school lists rowing among its current sports, and Rowing Ireland lists the club among its Galway affiliates.
The club was established in 1932 and made its first competitive appearance against St Patrick's Boat Club in schoolboy fours later that year. Irish Jesuit Archives material places the revival of a school crew in the early 1930s and credits it with an important role in Galway rowing.
In 1955 Menlo Emmet's Rowing Club donated its Woodquay boathouse to St Joseph's on the condition that the school develop rowing. The school currently delegates approval of rowing coaches and responsibility for safeguarding arrangements to the club committee.
The club became a regular national-championship contender after the junior championships began in 1964. Its record includes national titles in several junior grades and competition at the British Schools Regatta, Ghent International Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta.
Former members have represented Ireland at the Home International Regatta, Coupe de la Jeunesse and World Junior Rowing Championships. In March 2013, members travelled to Australia to compete in the Sydney International Rowing Regatta.
The club remains active in Galway racing. Results from the 2024 Tribesmen Head of the River list St Joseph's crews in men's junior 18 fours and men's junior 16 coxed fours.
