About this club
University of Galway Boat Club is the university's largest sports club and rows from its facilities beside the River Corrib in Galway. The university provides more than three kilometres of flat water, boat storage, changing rooms and water access by slipway.
An earlier club facilities page records two boat sheds, a weights room, stationary bikes, 30 rowing machines and access to the campus high-performance gym. Its listed fleet comprised six eights, five coxed fours, five coxless fours, seven pairs and multiple single sculls.
The university says the club has been winning races since the 1970s. Its modern programme spans men's and women's crews across senior, intermediate, club, novice and masters grades in both sweep and sculling boats.
In 2022 the club was Ireland's top-performing national-championship club with nine wins. Its published list includes women's senior and novice eights, men's intermediate single and pair, and women's club, intermediate and novice crews.
The 2024 season brought both the men's and women's Division One Grand League titles. At the Irish Championships, University of Galway won the women's senior four, intermediate eight and intermediate coxed four among its listed victories.
Donnacha Keeley, Brian Colsh and Donagh Claffey represented the club at the 2024 World Under-23 Championships. Keeley won lightweight-double gold and Colsh won men's-double bronze.
Alumni Fiona Murtagh and Aifric Keogh became two-time Olympians and finished eighth in the women's pair at Paris 2024. The club has also hosted a Head of the River on the Corrib, with the 2007 course running from Lough Corrib to below Quincentennial Bridge.
