Metres-per-stroke is the distance the boat travels per drive, and it falls out of a single equation: DPS equals 500 divided by the product of the 500m split in seconds and the stroke rate in strokes per minute, then multiplied by 60. The intuition runs cleaner: count the metres the boat covers in a minute and divide by the rate. A 1:48 split at 22 strokes per minute moves the hull 277.78 metres each minute, which lands at 12.63 metres per stroke. The triangle in three forms
Three numbers, one equation, written three different ways depending on which you already have. Going from rate and split to DPS: metres_per_stroke = (500 / split_seconds) x (60 / rate). Going the other way from DPS and rate back to split: split_seconds = 30000 / (rate x metres_per_stroke). Boat speed in metres per second falls out cleanly as DPS multiplied by rate, then divided by 60. Why rate without DPS is wasted effort
Rate is a measure of cadence, nothing more. Two athletes both rating 28 can be a full 1.5 metres apart on stroke length, and the longer-stroked one moves the boat decisively faster off the same handle work. That is the entire reason Irish coaches anchor squad rowing on DPS rather than rate or even split alone. Hold a 1:46 at 24 strokes per minute and the boat covers 11.79 metres per stroke. Lift the rate to 30 to hold the same 1:46 and DPS drops to 9.43 metres, a gap of 2.36 metres bled out of every drive for zero boat-speed return. DPS on the Lee, Lough Ree and Inniscarra is a different animal
On a Concept2 RowErg the flywheel decelerates predictably between drives, so DPS is mostly a story about stroke arc and leg drive. What metres-per-stroke figure should an Irish open-club rower be chasing?
Openweight adults pulling clean strokes typically post 11 to 13 metres per stroke down at 18 to 22 strokes per minute, then settle into 8 to 10 metres per stroke once rate climbs into the 32 to 36 race band. Lightweight athletes and women generally run roughly 10 to 15 per cent shorter because the absolute stroke arc is smaller. Anything below 7 metres per stroke at any rate is a flag, usually pointing to short reach at the catch, an early back swing that cuts the leg drive short, or washing out at the finish. Does erg DPS match the number you see on the water?
Related but not identical. Erg DPS comes down to flywheel inertia and your stroke arc, so the equation behaves cleanly. On-water DPS depends on hull glide between strokes, blade slip at the catch and finish, crew synchronisation and how the boat is rigged. Concept2 RowErg DPS at a given rate runs roughly 10 to 15 per cent higher than on-water DPS for the same perceived effort, because the flywheel decelerates predictably while hull deceleration is messier. Track both numbers if you can. They tell different stories, but a rower with a high erg DPS who fails to translate to on-water DPS usually has a timing or rigging issue rather than a fitness gap.
Why does DPS fall off the moment a crew pushes for a faster split?
Almost always because the rate climbs faster than the power does. Pushing for a sharper split through cadence trades metres-per-stroke for tempo every single time. The cleaner version of speed is more force per stroke at the same rate, which holds DPS flat while the split drops. The other classic cause is fatigue. As lactate floods in over a hard 2k or the back end of a 5k, the reach at the catch shortens by a few centimetres and the finish lifts a fraction early. Both of those quietly carve a metre off each drive. What stroke rate should an Irish 1st VIII race a 2k erg at?
Senior openweight men typically race the Olympic 2k in the 32 to 36 strokes per minute band, openweight women in the 30 to 34 band, IURC athletes around 30 to 34, lightweights of either gender in the same 30 to 34 window, and Junior 18 squads usually land at 30 to 34 also. Rating higher than that without the DPS to back it up burns effort with no boat-speed payoff. Most Irish coaches would rather see an athlete drop their target rate by two and stretch the stroke out before rebuilding rate from a longer base. Does pushing the rate up actually change watt output on the PM5?
No. Watt output on a Concept2 RowErg depends only on split: watts equal 2.80 divided by the cube of split-seconds divided by 500, which is entirely independent of how fast the handle is moving back and forth between strokes. What rate does change is how hard each drive has to be in order to hold that watt figure. Holding a fast split at a low rate forces a heavier average drive force, which is biomechanically demanding and harder to sustain late in a piece because each drive sits closer to maximum force capacity.
