Rate by itself is half the story. Two 1V eights pulling 34 strokes a minute can be a length apart at the 1,500m mark because one boat carries five extra inches of run per drive. This tool pegs rate against /500m split and pulls out the distance per stroke, the per-minute meters covered, and the total stroke count over 2k and 5k. Run it the other direction and a target DPS tells you the split a crew has to hold to make that length stick.

Why two crews at the same rate cover different water

Distance per stroke is the meters a shell travels between one catch and the next. The math is straightforward: take 60 divided by stroke rate to get seconds per stroke, multiply by meters covered per second (which is 500 divided by split-seconds), and the product is DPS. Run a 1:50 split at 24 strokes per minute and each drive covers 11.36 meters. Hold the same 1:50 at 32 spm and DPS falls to 8.52 meters. Shell speed reads identical on the GPS, but the higher-rate crew is paying for the same length of run by spinning the handle eight extra times every minute. Across a 2k that is sixteen more strokes for the same finish time, which is sixteen more catches that can check the boat and sixteen more recoveries to organize.

Method behind the math

The formula in one line

Three numbers ride together: stroke rate (R), split (S in seconds per 500), and distance per stroke (D in meters). The identity is D = 30000 / (S x R). Or read it as: meters per minute is 30000 divided by split, and DPS is that figure divided by rate. Need the split a target DPS demands? Flip it to S = 30000 / (D x R). Need the rate a target DPS sustains at a chosen split? R = 30000 / (D x S). Shell speed in meters per second is DPS multiplied by rate divided by 60. Whichever two numbers you have, the third drops out without a second equation.

Rate without DPS is wasted heart rate

Stroke rate measures handle frequency. /500m split measures shell speed. DPS measures the work each catch and drive actually performs on the water. A boat that rates up to chase a faster split without lifting DPS is paying the metabolic bill twice: once for the extra strokes and once for the recovery between them. Sharpening selection during a seat race means asking which athlete can hold longer DPS at the rate the coach calls. Rate is a number anyone can chase. DPS is the number that quietly separates the 1V from the 2V at the IRA Regatta. Ratio: the third number that nobody puts on the PM5

Drive time and recovery time together make up one stroke cycle. Ratio is recovery seconds divided by drive seconds, normally written as 2:1 or 3:1. At 20 spm a stroke takes 3.0 seconds total: roughly 0.75 on the drive and 2.25 on the recovery (a 3:1 ratio). Climb to 36 spm and a stroke compresses to 1.67 seconds total, with drive time barely changing while recovery falls to under one second (closer to a 1.2:1 ratio). DPS holds up at high rate only if the drive stays fast and the recovery shortens cleanly, not by rushing the slide. Crews that bleed DPS as the rate climbs are almost always crashing the recovery rather than losing the drive. On the water the cost compounds because a rushed slide checks the shell at every catch.

What DPS should a varsity heavyweight be pulling?

At 18-20 spm fall steady state, openweight 1V men typically cover 12.5-13.5 meters per stroke. By the time the rate sits in the race pace band of 32-36 spm during C.R.A.S.H.-B prep, DPS settles between 8.5 and 10 meters for the same athlete. Openweight women and lightweight men usually run around 0.8-1.2 meters shorter at every rate because absolute stroke length scales with leg drive and reach. Anything below 7 meters at any rate is a red flag worth filming, because the loss is almost always a short catch or an early back swing, not a power deficit.

How do I lift my distance per stroke without dropping the split?

Three places to find the meters. First, length at the catch: shins vertical, arms genuinely fully extended, body pivoted forward without collapsing. Second, leg connection: full leg drive with the back held until the legs are flat, then a clean swing through. Third, the recovery: hands away cleanly, ride the slide instead of slamming back into the next catch. Drill work at 18 spm with a target DPS forces the issue because there is nowhere to hide. A 6 mile fall steady state at 18 holding 12.5 meters teaches the body the length that has to come back when the rate goes up at HOCR or at the spring sprint races.

Is DPS the same on the erg and in the shell?

Related but not interchangeable. Erg DPS rides on flywheel deceleration between drives, which is predictable. On-water DPS rides on hull glide between drives, which is messy and depends on water state, wind, run, blade slip and crew timing. A 1V eight at 32 spm on Mercer Lake typically covers around 10-15 percent less per stroke than the same athletes on a PM5 at the same rate and split. Both numbers are worth tracking, but compare them inside their own column. Why does DPS fall when I push the split harder?

Almost always because the rate climbs faster than the power. The temptation under fatigue is to rip the handle quicker, which lifts the rate without lifting the work per stroke. Faster splits should ideally come from more force per drive at the same rate, which protects DPS. The second common cause is technique tightening up: reach shortens, the back opens early, and the finish pulls high. Both wreck stroke length. Filming a 6k at the back end of a winter session and comparing catch-to-catch DPS at minute 4 versus minute 20 normally shows the deficit in five minutes.

What rate should I race a 2k at on the erg?

Varsity openweight men typically race C.R.A.S.H.-B 2k tests at 33-37 spm, openweight women 30-34, lightweights 32-35, and U19 athletes 30-34. National team contenders sit at the top of each band. Rating higher than the band without the DPS to back it up burns lactate without earning meters. Most US program coaches would rather see a 1V freshman sit 2 spm lower than the catalog number and hold an extra half-meter of DPS than rate up into the high 30s and lose run between strokes. Anchor the rate to the split the athlete can hold for 2,000m, not the split they can hold for 30 seconds.

Does rate change my watts?

Watts depend only on split on a Concept2. The canonical equation watts = 2.80 / (split/500)^3 has no rate term in it. In practice though, holding 1:42 at 30 spm requires far more force per drive than 1:42 at 38 spm, which is a different ask metabolically. Lower-rate work with bigger DPS tends to be more efficient at submaximal paces because every additional stroke per minute adds another recovery to power. That is why varsity squads run 18-20 spm fall steady state for hours: it builds the aerobic base while drilling the length that has to survive when the rate goes up at the C.R.A.S.H.-B Sprints or on the Charles.
