Distance per stroke (DPS) is the cleanest measure of stroke efficiency. This calculator converts between stroke rate, 500m split and DPS in both directions, so you can see exactly how much water you cover per drive at any rate-pace combination.

How do you calculate distance per stroke?

Distance per stroke (DPS) equals 500 metres divided by (split-in-seconds times stroke-rate divided by 60). Or more intuitively: DPS = distance covered in one minute / stroke rate. A 1:50 split at 24 strokes per minute covers 273m per minute, which works out to 11.36 metres per stroke. The same split at 30 spm gives only 9.09 metres per stroke - same boat speed, more effort. Better-trained rowers cover more metres per stroke at every rate, which is why coaches obsess over DPS as a measure of stroke quality.

How the calculator works

The formula

The arithmetic is simple: distance per stroke = (500 / split_seconds) * (60 / stroke_rate), or rearranged, DPS = 500m / (split_seconds * stroke_rate / 60). The reverse: split = (500 * 60) / (DPS * stroke_rate). Boat speed = DPS * rate. Whatever two numbers you have, the third drops out.

Why DPS matters more than rate alone

Rate by itself tells you how often you are moving the handle. Split tells you boat speed. DPS tells you how efficiently each stroke moves you - the closest erg proxy for on-water rowing technique. Two athletes pulling 1:50 at 24 spm cover the same distance per stroke (11.36m). If one rows the same 1:50 at 28 spm, their DPS drops to 9.74m - they're working harder per kilometre to make the same boat speed. That gap is where coaches focus drill work. On-water vs erg DPS

On the water, DPS is even more important because crew speed depends on every blade entering the water at the same point in the cycle. A crew with mismatched DPS at the same rate is fighting itself. Coaches use stroke meters and SpeedCoach data to track DPS in the boat, and the same arithmetic applies. Erg DPS is a useful proxy but not identical - flywheel inertia behaves differently from hull glide, so on-water DPS at the same rate is usually 10-15% lower than erg DPS for the same effort.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good distance per stroke for rowing?

Adult openweight competitive rowers typically hit 11-13 metres per stroke at low rates (18-22 spm) and 8-10 metres per stroke at race pace (32-36 spm). Lightweights and women run roughly 10-15% lower because their absolute stroke length is shorter. Anything below 7m per stroke at any rate suggests stroke quality issues - usually short reach, weak leg drive or fishing on the recovery.

How do I increase my distance per stroke?

Three levers: longer reach at the catch (lengthen the stroke arc), full leg drive without breaking the back early, and a relaxed recovery that doesn't cut stroke length. Coaches often run drills at 18-20 spm with a target DPS to force athletes to find the length without the rate masking the deficit. On the erg, that means going low rate, big DPS, then watching the same DPS hold as rate climbs.

Is DPS the same on the erg and in the boat?

Similar but not identical. Erg DPS depends on flywheel inertia and your stroke arc; on-water DPS depends on hull speed between strokes (glide), blade slip and crew synchronisation. Erg DPS at a given rate is usually 10-15% higher than on-water DPS for the same effort because the flywheel decelerates predictably while a hull behaves messily. Both metrics are useful but compare apples to apples - track them separately.

Why does my DPS drop when I push harder?

Usually because rate climbs faster than power. If you push for a faster split by raising the rate, you trade DPS for tempo. Faster splits should ideally come from more force per stroke at the same rate - that keeps DPS up. The other common cause: tight technique under fatigue. As lactate builds, reach shortens and finish position lifts early, both of which kill DPS.

What rate should I aim for during a 2k erg test?

Senior openweight men typically race 2k at 32-36 spm, women 30-34 spm, juniors 30-34 spm, lightweights 30-34 spm. Holding higher rate than that without DPS to back it up wastes effort - you're rating up to mask power that isn't there. Does stroke rate change my watts?

No, watts depend only on split. The Concept2 power formula (watts = 2.80 / (split/500)^3) is rate-agnostic. But in practice, holding a faster split at lower rate requires more force per stroke, which is harder to sustain because each drive is closer to your max force. Lower-rate / higher-DPS rowing is usually metabolically more efficient at submaximal paces because fewer total strokes means less recovery work.
