Avon Rowing Club rows on Kerrs Reach in Christchurch, one of four clubs that train on that stretch of water. The club traces its origins to the Trades Rowing Club, formed in 1881 and renamed Avon in 1884, whose first members were young artisans and mechanics.
It has more than 550 members, including rowers from Burnside High School, Marian College, Rangi Ruru Girls' School, Riccarton High School, Shirley Boys' High School, St Andrew's College, St Bede's College, St Margaret's College, St Thomas of Canterbury College and Villa Maria College.
Members row at all levels from under-15 and novice through to masters, in sculling and sweep events. The club also hosts overseas visitors, corporate rowers and university rowers, runs its masters programme in three blocks across the year and offers adult learn-to-row courses. Avon has rowers in New Zealand representative squads and is a Rowing NZ Hub.
