About this club

Rangi Ruru Girls' School rowing trains at Kerrs Reach in Christchurch, with erg and strength and conditioning sessions at school and training camps in Twizel. Rowing is open to students from Years 9 to 13, and Year 9 students can try the sport in Term 4.

The season runs from the start of Term 4 to the end of Term 1. Under 15 rowers train seven sessions a week and seniors up to eight, mixing rowing, erging, running and strength work. New rowers complete a learn to row programme of erg sessions at the end of Term 3 before moving on to the water at the October camp. A Development Programme lets students combine rowing with another sport.

Crews race four major regattas at Lake Ruataniwha, then must qualify at the South Island Secondary Schools Championships for the Maadi Regatta. Rangi Ruru was the top rowing school in New Zealand in 2021, 2022 and 2023 and the top girls' school in 2024 and 2025. In the 2025/26 season the squad won five golds and two silvers from 11 A finals at the national championships and eight golds from 20 A finals at the South Island championships.
