Cygnet Rowing Club rows on the Thames Tideway from the Civil Service Boathouse at Dukes Meadows in Chiswick, close to Barnes Railway Bridge. It shares the boathouse with Barnes Bridge Ladies Rowing Club.
Ten General Post Office officers formed Cygnet at the Duke's Head Hotel in Putney on 12 February 1890. The club first rented a dressing room and two boats at Putney, moved through Hammersmith and entered the purpose-built Civil Service Boathouse at Chiswick in 1932; several returning Civil Service clubs combined under the Cygnet name after the Second World War.
Cygnet runs courses for complete beginners, usually twice a year, with six weeks of land and water sessions. Its current site describes an adult racing club that is formally open but predominantly male, with women generally directed to the separately equipped Barnes Bridge Ladies club and juniors directed to other local clubs.
Active members receive coaching and normally train together five or six days a week. The club lists boats from eights to single sculls, a gym, changing rooms, a club room, kitchen and bar, plus a bungalow at Shepperton used for regular sculling camps.
The club races in winter heads and summer regattas, supporting committed athletes as far as Henley Royal Regatta while retaining a social-rowing option. Its published 2025 results include wins at Kingston Amateur Regatta and Henley Town and Visitors Regatta, and its annual report recorded 11 graduates from that year's Learn to Row course.
Cygnet joined other excluded clubs in forming the National Amateur Rowing Association in October 1890, won NARA championship fours and eights by 1894, and gained admission to the Amateur Rowing Association in 1923. Its own club regatta began in September 1895, while the present-day twice-yearly Shepperton camp gives novice and experienced members dedicated sculling practice.
