About this club

Eton College Boat Club rows at Eton College on the Thames and at Eton College Rowing Centre on Dorney Lake. Training for its senior programme takes place predominantly on Dorney's eight-lane Olympic course, which hosted rowing at the 2012 Games.

References to rowing at Eton reach back to the 1790s, and the boat club was founded in 1840. The college acquired Watkins' freehold in 1908 and further boathouse interests in 1910, when the Brocas Boathouse company was replaced by the Eton College Boat House association.

Eton describes a programme of more than 300 boys aged 13 to 18. Its senior structure centres on the first eight, while school investment supports a large coaching team, equipment and facilities; college rowers are regularly selected for national teams and offered rowing scholarships by American universities.

The club's competitive record includes 15 wins in the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. Published records also credit it with 14 Schools' Head victories and 20 Queen Mother Challenge Cup wins at the National Schools' Regatta.

At the 2023 National Schools' Regatta, Eton won both the first and second J16 eights and took bronze in the championship eight. Its current boat-club site describes Eton as the world's biggest boat club.

Eton also uses its rowing facilities beyond the school club. Its summer courses at Dorney accept boys and girls aged 12 to 16 at beginner and advanced levels, include selected free places for state-school pupils, and combine three daily outings with land training, head racing and a relay race.
