What is a Rowing Shell?
A rowing shell is the racing hull at the heart of the sport. Strip away the riggers, the seat and the oars and what is left is an engineered carbon fibre tube barely a few millimetres thick, holding its shape against the rower's power through nothing more than the geometry of the layup and a sliver of internal stiffening. At Hanlan Boat Club in Toronto or Brentwood College on Vancouver Island, the same hull design will be in use - the racing shell is the most internationally standardised piece of kit in any sport. Canadians use "shell" and "boat" without distinction, with "shell" leaning toward the racing context.
Why "shell"?
The name comes from how the hull feels in the hand. A racing single weighs about 14 kg. An eight weighs around 96 kg - a fraction of the combined weight of the crew that will sit inside it. The skin of the boat is a composite sandwich just two or three millimetres thick: carbon fibre prepreg laminate top and bottom, with a Nomex honeycomb or PVC foam core between them, vacuum-bagged and autoclave-cured. Press a thumb against the deck of a brand-new Hudson and you can feel the panel flex slightly before springing back. That is precisely the design intent - stiff enough to send the catch straight to the water, soft enough that an extra coat of paint would be a meaningful weight penalty.
The term entered the sport in the mid-1800s, when racing builders on the Thames and the Charles started producing hulls dramatically lighter than the working craft sharing the same water. The first sliding-seat shells appeared in the 1870s and the name stuck across the English-speaking rowing world. At Argonaut RC on the Toronto waterfront, Don RC further up the same shoreline, or St Catharines RC over on Henley Island, you'll hear members say 'pull the shell out' and 'pull the boat out' interchangeably in the same morning row. Both work. The word carries no formality.
Anatomy of a rowing shell
Every racing shell, from a 1x to an 8+, is built around the same set of components:
- Hull: the long narrow body itself. Wineglass profile below the waterline tapering to a knife edge at bow and stern. Single-skin construction at the top end of the racing market; sandwich construction for club boats where impact resistance matters more than the last 200 grams.
- Bow and stern: the front and back of the boat. Rowers sit facing the stern and travel backwards - the rower with the clearest view of where the boat is going is whoever happens to be looking over the bow at any given moment.
- Bow ball: a soft rubber cap fitted over the very tip of the bow. Required by Rowing Canada Aviron for any boat on the water. Prevents the carbon point from puncturing another hull, or another rower, in a collision.
- Keel and skeg: the keel runs the length of the hull below the waterline; the skeg is the small fin set a third of the way back from the stern. Together they make the boat track straight - without the skeg a single scull would yaw constantly with every imbalanced stroke.
- Seat and slide: a contoured seat mounted on small wheels that runs fore-and-aft along two stainless-steel rails set into the cockpit. The slide is what lets the rower drive with the legs, the largest power source in the stroke.
- Riggers: aluminium or carbon outrigger frames bolted to the gunwales, carrying the oarlocks well outboard of the hull. Sweep boats alternate port and starboard riggers down the length of the boat; sculling boats have one rigger per side per seat.
- Foot stretchers: angled platforms in the bottom of the cockpit where the rower's feet sit, strapped in with heel ties. Adjustable fore-and-aft and in pitch.
- Rudder and steering: a small rudder on the underside near the stern. Operated by the cox in coxed boats, or by a foot-controlled toe linkage in coxless fours and pairs.
The eight standard racing shell classes
World Rowing recognises eight official racing classes. All are raced at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta on Martindale Pond, at the CSSRA Championships at Brentwood, and at OUA and U SPORTS regattas across the season. They split cleanly along the sculling/sweep line:
Sculling shells (two oars per rower)
- Single scull (1x): 8.2 m hull, 14 kg minimum weight, one rower. The most demanding boat in the sport - any imbalance or timing error is visible immediately.
- Double scull (2x): 9.8 m hull, 27 kg minimum, two rowers, two sculls each.
- Quadruple scull (4x): 12.5 m hull, 52 kg minimum, four rowers, two sculls each.
Sweep shells (one oar per rower)
- Pair (2-): 9.8 m hull, 27 kg minimum, two rowers, no cox, foot-steering.
- Coxless four (4-): 13.4 m hull, 50 kg minimum, four rowers, no cox, foot-steering.
- Coxed four (4+): 13.4 m hull, 51 kg minimum, four rowers plus a cox.
- Eight (8+): 19.9 m hull, 96 kg minimum, eight rowers plus a cox. The showcase boat of every major regatta from Burnaby Lake to the Royal Canadian Henley.

Materials and construction
A modern racing shell is, in cross-section, a sandwich panel. The outer face is several plies of carbon fibre prepreg - unidirectional in the high-stress areas around the cockpit, woven in zones where torsional stiffness matters. The core is Nomex honeycomb (an aramid paper folded into hexagonal cells) or PVC structural foam, depending on where in the hull the panel sits. The inner face is another set of carbon plies. The whole layup is built up by hand inside a polished mould, vacuum-bagged to compress the laminate, and oven-cured for hours under controlled temperature. Riggers are either welded aluminium tube or wound carbon fibre. Hudson Boatworks builds in Picton, Ontario - their hulls are the default at most Ontario clubs and have podiumed at every major international championship. Empacher (Germany), Filippi (Italy) and Vespoli (USA) round out the field.
A new top-spec single scull from Hudson runs around CAD 14,000 to 18,000 by the time the rigger and seat are specified. A racing eight passes CAD 70,000 without difficulty and a fully optioned international-grade eight can land north of CAD 90,000 - the largest single equipment purchase most clubs ever make. Used boats trade at 30 to 60 percent of new pricing, and a well-maintained Hudson or Empacher from a decade ago will still race competitively at a club level. Wooden hulls - cedar planking over a steam-bent timber frame - were the standard until the late 1960s, and a few are still kept around Canadian boathouses for novice training because the extra weight makes them more stable. They are not raced at any serious level.
How rowing clubs manage their shells
A working Canadian club holds anywhere from 15 to 50 racing shells in the boathouse. Senior eights, racing fours, club doubles and quads, training singles, novice tubs - the inventory grows with every fundraising campaign. Why is a rowing boat called a shell?
The name reflects how thin the hull actually is. How many people fit in a rowing shell?
Racing classes hold 1, 2, 4 or 8 rowers. The single scull (1x) takes one. Doubles (2x) and pairs (2-) take two. Quads (4x) and fours (4+ or 4-) take four. The eight (8+) takes eight rowers and a coxswain. Crew sizes are fixed by World Rowing rules - no racing class exists for five, six or seven rowers. Coxed boats carry an additional coxswain who steers and directs the race but does not row.
What is a rowing shell made of?

The layup is laid into a polished mould by hand, vacuum-bagged to bond the layers, and oven-cured at high temperature. How much does a rowing shell cost?
A new club-grade single scull starts around CAD 8,000. A racing-spec single from Hudson or Empacher runs CAD 14,000 to 18,000 depending on rigger and seat options. A racing eight clears CAD 70,000 readily and an internationally specified eight reaches CAD 90,000 or more. Used shells trade at 30 to 60 percent of new pricing depending on age, builder and condition. Most Canadian clubs build their fleet over decades through a mix of provincial sport grants, alumni campaigns and gradual upgrades from used to new. A racing eight is almost always the largest single capital purchase a club makes in any given year.
What is the difference between a sweep shell and a sculling shell?
The rigging side is the technical difference. A sweep shell carries riggers on alternating sides down the length of the boat - bow seat rigs one way, two seat the other, and so on. A sculling shell carries a rigger on both sides at every seat. The hulls themselves are usually slightly different too: sculling boats sit narrower because the symmetric loading distributes hull forces evenly. Some training shells are convertible between rigs (called 'crossover' boats), but dedicated racing shells are built for one discipline. Most Canadian rowers learn sculling first and add sweep rowing later, often during their first university squad season at Western, McGill, Queen's or UVic.
How fast does a rowing shell go?
An Olympic men's eight at world-record pace covers 2,000 m in around 5:20, averaging roughly 22.5 km/h. A women's single scull at world-record pace covers the same distance in around 7:07, averaging 16.9 km/h. Bigger crews go faster: extra rowers add more propulsive power than they add to the total weight and wetted surface drag. Outdoor course times are affected by wind direction, water temperature and current - which is why World Rowing publishes 'best times' rather than official world records for any course outside a closed regatta venue.
