Rowing Clubs in Newcastle (11 Clubs)

Founded 16 December 1852 (briefly as Leander ARC); the first open amateur rowing club in the North East and the oldest surviving sporting club on Tyneside.

Founded 1867 by members who left Northern Rowing Club; sits in Priors Haven by the North Pier. Hosted the British Coastal Championships in August 2025 and runs strong fine-boat and coastal squads.

Founded November 1878 as Hexham Boat Club at the North Eastern Hotel; sculling-dominant until sweep boats arrived in the 1960s. Hosts the long-running Hexham Regatta over 700m at Tyne Green.

Established March 1911 as the boat club of Armstrong College (which later became Newcastle University); celebrated its centenary in 2011 and contests BUCS, Henley and the Boat Race fixture against Durham.

Launched 1936 by French teacher E "Dickie" Akhurst using Tyne ARC kit; bought its own boathouse at Scotswood in 1953 and moved to a purpose-built Blaydon boathouse in March 1964. Alumnus Roger F Brown rowed for GB at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics.

Originally formed 1946 from the remnants of Empire, Hawthorn, Gateshead & District and Walker & Wallsend; folded in the 1960s and refounded in 2007 with a new boathouse opened in 2009 with Durham University support.

Started rowing out of Hexham Boat Club at Tyne Green in the mid-1970s and constituted as a standalone junior club in 1980; now 120+ members. 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Matt Wells learned to row here.

University boat club for Northumbria, training out of Tyne Amateur Rowing Club at Newburn with novice, intermediate and recreational squads racing across the UK.

Affiliated to British Rowing in November 2014; a registered charity offering sculling and skiff rowing with a specialism in disability and adaptive rowing, open to anyone aged 12+.

Affiliated British Rowing community club covering north Newcastle; one of the partner clubs that helps organise the Great Tyne Row each year.

Set up in 2024 in partnership with Tyne United RC, led by ex-competitive rower Faye Mileham. Pupils from Year 9 train through five weekly sessions across erg, water and S&C.
